Once in a while we would run into dog fish and would have to switch to lures or move. They have a "thorn", about an inch long, right behind their dorsal fin. One curled around backwards and stuck me with it while I was removing the hook. Massive pain that lasted a long time. Be careful when handling them.

Good to hear you caught a salmon. This was always our favorite time of year to fish for the big Northern Cohos, always our favorite. I have had them take it 5 feet back from the boat when checking baits. Another fun thing was to see one jump and then troll fast right over where they jumped. That worked pretty well.

Re: Help I can't catch fish!

I am glad to see that you caught fish, sounds like you got it figured out now. When you have time you might take a look on youtube, there are a ton of videos on their about how to catch fish up in the Alaska region, also how to dig clams, catch crabs and a lot more. Have you tried crabbing or clam digging?

Oh one more thing

At least you will not go hungry. I like crabs a clams about as much as I like fish, and I like the fishes because the fishes are delicious.

Re: Help I can't catch fish!

My wife and I ate LOTS of salmon for over 50 years. A few years ago we decided they tasted like fish, even the Kokanees, which are land locked fresh water Sockeyes, and started doing catch & release. Dungeness crab and big scallops are our favorite seafood.
