I know the, If I had earlier! i am thinking that for dousing the main, or dousing the jib and sailing under single reef next time. I do ok with a single reef, the double reef only sent me sideways. Not enough sail to make me go forward.
All one can do in this kind of weather, is take it on the chin, learn, try again with the things you learned, and hope you do better next time.

I asked Hope last night if she was glad that she sailed in the race.
She said "Yes"
I said that we could have motored back the last leg, and asked her if she wished that we had.
She said "No, Dad... we needed to finish"
Her Foulweather Bluff T-shirt, with our boat name on the back, attracted a lot of attention at her school on Monday.
Thanks to all for sailing with us, either on the water on online.
It was an important day.

Truly. She seems like quite the young lady. I was nervous at (almost) 43 being out in that weather with four skilled crew onboard, though I'm sure she has way more experience than I do.
If your next boat's going to have an extra hull, maybe you'll sell the C30 to me
Marty: I thought we were doing fine with the double reef, beating at 5-6 knots. Were we making a lot of leeway?

Oh... I almost forgot....
My brother, who is a very serious racer, said:
"I never heard of a 14-year-old driving during the start of a keelboat race"
I said:
"Yep"

Anthony,
Yes we were doing more leeway than we should/could have, as wehn e stuck the rail+ into the water, our speed would go from mid5's/low 6's down to lower 4's, and I could also feel us move sideways. This was the reason for trying to release the main sheet with gust, pull back in when the wind died, to try and keep the boat level, or shall we say, as level as possible.
To a degree, we probably had a bit too much SA out, so we could have made just as fast a time/speed, by reducing SA< lowering total max speed to say 5.5 knots, but the sideways, slow down when we heeled would go away, making our net speed over ground faster. Paragon caught us, even tho they stopped to put a storm jib on, and got us by abot 3 min, when at one point in time, we were probably 2-3 min ahead of them after they lowered and raised the SJ.
Just a learning, figuring out what my boat will do or not do in a given wind condition etc.
None the less a good race, you, my boyz and Tom all worked together as a team when need be, that helped the overall part, allowed me to steer etc as should be going on, and we did good all thing considering.
Marty

Actually Anthony,
Now that I reread my post and you question......
When I was refering to double reef only, was at the finish, when we took the jib down, and I was thinking, dangerous thing to do, ie think. We could sail to the marina entry under double reef main only, and we were blown sideways and backwards, no forward. Had not had that happen to me before. I had in a few other times out, with similar winds, used a single reefed main and done quite well.
But, we were still getting blown sideways with the combo we had up, and in hindsight, we could have done better with a better combo of main and jib, main or jib only.......Again, you do not know what will will not work, until you try it in a race, or non race situation. I have done some jib only, single reef only days, and done quite well, that was the first double reef with 110, and it did well untill the wind piped up above 30 steady would be my guess, as I am not sure my anomometer is really reading correct, I think in winds about 20 it is off 10-30% or so. Heeling does not help the thing either.
Again, thank you for being on board. we'll see what we can do to get you back on board, or on Davids boat too. Altho it may be after the little one is born!

The attached link sends you to the SA thread describing the MOB incident that happened during the race.
It would be good for all of us to consider these events thoughtfully, and, perhaps rethink the safety precautions we take.
