Re: Ganges Suggestions

I'm going with Paul. I've been impressed with Lopez, Roche, Friday Harbor and poets cove and didn't like too much Ganges. Maybe I was expecting more. The worst so far was otter bay on the west side of pender. I tied to the outer and empty dock at 8 o'clock and the owner rusher down and chased me off! I have no idea why. Didn't ask me if I was staying the night, going to the store. Just rused up to me literally within 2 minutes and said

"It's fifty dollars just to touch our dock, this is a private marina. "

I did t know what to say. I just said "uh my guide book said"

He cuts me off

" we'll we let the public here but it's fifty dollars. Why don't you go anchor, there's a public beach over there. "

Totally ruined my night. Cruising the gulf islands said it was known for its warm welcome to visiting boaters. Don't know why he didn't like me. My boat is very clean and I take a shower an wear new clothes everyday(which sucks, I know)

Re: Ganges Suggestions

Ganges is a great place to visit. Even if for no other reason than to enjoy the fantastic music scene at the Treehouse Cafe. We have always enjoyed ourselves. Frankly, "hippies" (people still use that term?) bohemians, free spirit vagabonds add to a colorful arts vibe. Kick out the characters and you end up with Tim Hortons and shops selling Thomas Kincade paintings.

Last Summer we stayed at the Kanaka Public Dock. These are the best docks in town. You pay at the pay station and I think there is a phone number for the harbormaster. It's a little disconnected because the Harbormaster also manages the marina on the other side of town by the park.

The water is really gross. Funny, with all of the dissolved humanity, it's probably the same quality as the Ganges river.

Re: Ganges Suggestions

We always enjoy Ganges,( but we don't swim there ) and try to get onto the Kanaka dock too, right in front of Thrifty's and, of course, the Tree House. Last time we were there the owner's 8 or 9 yr old son did a terrifically entertaining standup bit.. had us all rolling.

Re: Ganges Suggestions

It just seems more artificial than Friday harbor. And it's smaller and the music is all really, really old people music. And nobody was friendly. I've been waves at today probably ten times. I dontthink people on salt spring even acknowledged my exeistence. I'm glad I'm jot in the gulf is the anymore. The only part of my trip I haven't like. I think I was in a bad loos that week because of them.

Friday harbor is just better in every way and has more character. Ganges seemed like they threw it up in the 90's for tourists with nothing to do.

And the sailing is terrible because not only are there 100 crap pots per square foot of water the valley into Ganges is super narrow and blocks alot if the wind.

I guess it's not like the worst place but I can't see anything to recommend. I'm in front of Friday harbor right now. I'd go there instead.

Re: Ganges Suggestions

Ah. That was last night? Last night was pretty. I hope this weather lasts. I can't see my baker, in right by the ferry. I was anchoring last time I was here over by the UW labs but I wanted a change of pace.
