On the Ches Bay tides and current can vary from dead on to 2-4 hours off. I've been in an overnight race where the flood never showed up. Tides are from the moon, Currents are what you see on the water. They don't always match up.
Tides and currents at the same locale seldom coincide. The tides at Porlier Pass can be an hour away from the turn (slack). That is enough time to get yourself into a whole lot of difficulty. Desolation Sound gets 18 foot tides, but hardly any current.
Both the sun and the moon affect tides.
