Re: What and where in Vancouver and Vancouver Island?

Gentlemen, thanks for the wonderful suggestions. My wife has mapped out and printed out all suggested locations to visit. I can't promise if I can visit Capital Iron. My wife has developed hypersensitivity to the hardware store. LOL.

I just need a few more inside info from you about restaurant that we must to there in Vancouver and Victoria.

1. Seafood restaurant
2. Local Vancouver fair
3. Japanese restaurant
4. Good Sushi place
5. Any good ethnic cuisines

TIA.

Re: What and where in Vancouver and Vancouver Island?

Great Thai food in Sidney - Sabhai Thai Restaurant near Port Sidney

Great breakfast at 3rd Street Cafe

Sidney Restaurants: See 58 restaurants with 558 reviews - TripAdvisor

But you also need to check out the local beers. BC Beer Guide - Breweries

Granville Island beers are OK but some of my favourites are

Race Rocks - ale
Hermann's Dark - lager

There are some very good brew pubs. Spinnaker's in Victoria is right on the harbour.

Re: What and where in Vancouver and Vancouver Island?

One of my favorite Vancouver restaurants to bring visitors to is Shabusen, and excellent sushi and yakiniku house. Every table has a barbeque or two built into the table. You order meats, they are brought raw but marinated and very thinly sliced, and then you toss them on the grill. Best of all, they have an all-you-can-eat option for $20/person which includes yakiniku and sushi.

Shabusen is on Burrard between Robson and Georgia, right in the heart of downtown.

My favorite Thai place is in Yaletown, "Simply Thai" on the corner of Davie and Hamilton, but that might be because it's a block from my office :P

Somebody mentioned Steveston... if you happen to go, I recommend halibut and chips from Dave's Fish and Chips.

Another place I haven't been to in a while but would recommend is the Kino Cafe on Cambie street. I can't recall the cuisine but they have very good live flamenco groups. Fairly close to downtown.

For more culture, I would recommend the UBC opera company. Tickets are usually cheaper than the "professionals" but the singers are very good. UBC might be a nice place to visit in general; good view of the Straight of Georgia, and probably good opportunities for art exhibits as well.

If you are driving from Victoria to Nanaimo stop in at Cowichan Bay, The Rock Cod Cafe is good.

Wow..... It is a good thing that my 2013 New Year's resolution is Eat more, do less exercise and gain more lbs. I think I can get my wish by the end of Jan..... LOL. I am sure we will check these out. Thanks.

I guess we have to skip the traditional Cantonese Chinese Food this time. We may look into the regional Chinese food, like Hakka, Chaozhou, Macanese, and etc.

Re: What and where in Vancouver and Vancouver Island?

Yes, we went and have gone back home. Thanks for everyone, we had a great time in Vancouver or should i say Hong-couver. I have not seen so many Asians since I left Hong Kong in my teenager year. I don't feel like a minority in Richmond.....hahaha.

Despite the weather was cloudy and wet except for one day, Vancouver/Richmond and Victoria are so beautiful. The water is so clear. Now I know why i don't like Chesapeake bay that much. I love the city, the people and their way of life. But then I have been in most of Canadian cities, from Edmonton to Halifax. There is not a Canadian cities that I don't like.

On our first day, I went to Finn Slough and Steveston. I spent lot of the time taking pictures and reading posted note at Finn Slough. It was so fascinating and a photographer paradise.

We rented a VW golf, and drove through many coastal roads and stopping everywhere that we found interesting, enjoy seeing different housing construction to the insignificance mailbox design. ....

All I can say is: We will be back. In fact we are checking out some fights in late March and Early April. It is not bad, $400 RT from Philly for now. But from Baltimore or NYC it is selling like $500 to $600. Not sure why?

Oh yeah, one thing I don't like is the water is too damn cold. I need a dry suit.

Nice, glad to hear you had a good time.

ps; the water is only cold for the first few minutes, after that you really don't feel much at all.

Desolation Sound (in the summer) has the warmest water north of Panama. Even the fresh water lakes are warm.
