Ellen it seems that our bilge layouts are different. I do not have a water tank in my bilge. In my boat I can remove the cabin sole in the vee berth as well as in the forward saloon and gain access to both sides of the compression post although I did 95 percent of the work from the forward saloon. If I understand your description correctly removal of that water tank would be necessary. If you can remove your shower floor without major demolition I can see that allowing good access as well. Is your vee berth cabin sole removable?

Scupper - we do seem to have different arrangement (2nd water tank, holding tank, AC machinery under our V-berth), so think we will have to work that part out ourselves. I was hoping for a nice pat on the hand and suggestions of another kinder, gentler cause and easy solution. Thanks for offering some great repair ideas! The family is coming to visit so we will be getting into this in about 2 weeks time. Enough time to mull it over a bit.....

Hi All,
This issue has been discussed before on this forum.I posted several yrs ago about having repaired mine with a S/S pipe 3" diam. with a jackscrew from a house jackpost at the top and a s/s saddle over the stub of the old compression post.Another factor to consider is where did the water come from that rotted the comp.post?In the older boats like mine the mast shoe on the deck had a flush hole thru which the mast wiring passed and rain water entered.On later boats LaFiel included a raised nipple that kept water from entering.So-after fixing the comp post you should replace the mast shoe on the cabin top with a newer type from LaFiel.

My mast shoe did not have this but all my wires are looped before going through the deck. This has been effective since there are no signs of water intrusion on the wood compression post between the cabin sole and the deck. Note on boats that I looked at that were from the mid 90's showed signs of water on this post. I believe that all the water that deteriorated my post simply came in through the the chain locker. I believe that my all fiberglass/gel coat repair has addressed this issue.
Ellen sorry to not offer the quick fix and reassuring pat but as nifty has stated, it is fixable. Got to love these boats that are totally rebuildable. I share with you the patience the older boats require.

Update: Florida Rigging and Hydraulics, who replaced our mizzen compression post recently, checked our mainmast post today. The verdict is ......the compression post appears to be solid (Yay!) and there is no evidence of excessive moisture. Yay! He did advise us to take some measurements and keep a close watch, which we will surely do. If anything changes, we will have some good ideas on repairs, thanks to you guys!

Ellen: I suggest coming up the east coast or ditch and do some Chesapeake Bay exploring. The fall is the best season. When it starts to get to cold then head back south.
