Cockpit Cushions

Do you have those high density foam cockpit cushions - the ones that are nearly as hard as the fibreglass? What do you do with them when underway?

We're thinking of slicing ours nearly through in order to be able to fold them for easier stowage - anyone done this? Any reason not to?

I'd love to see a good discussion of ideal cockpit cushions. Most offer all the comfort of a 2" X "12 plus the security of a roller-skate. On our last boat we finally went with a couple of 2" Therma-Rest inflatable camping pads which 1) are VERY comfortable to lie down on; 2) are easily folded into almost no space when you want the out of the cockpit and 3) are easily folded in half when you are going in and out of the cockpit.

Thoughts of others???????

Dear Bill (Noirrie), welcome!!! I hope your closing goes off without a hitch. We (my wife, Imi, and I) also are brand new PSC 37 owners facing a steep and most welcome learning curve. Every time I get down to the boat to do a bit of "work" I keep muttering "so this is what a solidly built boat feels like." I can't wait till we get to May and have her in the water!

I guess we are resurrecting Bill Balme's thread from last spring, but what the heck, hopefully he won't mind the belated replies...

We ordered our cockpit cushions from PSC (back when they were in Fullerton). They are closed cell foam upholstered with a faux leather grained vinyl (or something like that). More importantly, they are a perfect, custom fit. We do not remove them when underway. They fit in place so snugly -- kind of like a puzzle -- that they stay put just fine. They remain in the cockpit as long as we're aboard -- underway, at anchor -- and only get stowed below when we leave the boat.

If the new PSC will make them for you, I recommend their cushions. Since they have the cockpit template, you should expect a perfect fit.

Check out the Bottomsiders site @ BottomSiders cockpit cushions for powerboats and sailboats
They make the closed cell foam coated with a high durability rubberized non skid material that can be ordered in all sorts of colors. I've had some for years and they hold up very well. they also have templates for most boat cockpits including PSC. They will also customize and make with a molded in tab hinge that aids in storage. On our 34 we have the rear helm seat and a couple of 20" x 40" cushions with the taped tabbed hinge so they fold to 20"x20" for easy storage in the quarter berth. (My wife refers to the quarter berth as the garage!)The nice thing about the bottomsiders is that they stay put while underway and sailing as oppposed to other cushions that always seem to slide off the seats when changing tacks.

I just had some great cushions made with dry fast foam. Much more comfortable than closed cell. I used a website called IndyCanvas for mine. Great to deal with and the cushions were top notch.

We use closed cell foam with net mesh covering, and store them slung under the dogger on straps to hold them tight to the sunbrella, clearing your head as you go down the companionway, air drying at night.

Hi Broke,

I wil try to get you a photo, but my camera and computer are not playing nice lately, so no promises. I do really like ours, especially how snugly they fit.
