VALIS checking back in

It's been a while since I logged onto the Sailnet PSC forum, but the Yahoo group has gone pretty quiet lately.

VALIS was pretty busy this summer, competing in the Pacific Cup race from San Francisco to Hawaii, and sailing back home to San Francisco. We had a great time, both directions.

Also, you can see VALIS on the cover of the December SAIL magazine! I've got a scan of it on our blog. I've also put photos of the Hawaii trip on the website.

Regards to all,

Paul,

Good to hear from you! Sounds like you've put even more miles under your keel!

If you can get your "post count" up to 10, then you would be able to share some of those great photos and links here on Sailnet.

There is a thread in the "Off-Topic" forum called "The Song Chain" ( http://www.sailnet.com/forums/off-to...ong-chain.html ) in which you can post any sort of drivel to quickly build-up your post-count, and thereby enable the advanced features that the SailNet forums offer (photos, links, private messaging, etc).

Cheers, John

Reflections Of Another PSC Owner

Hello Paul:

Welcome back. The Yahoo Groups site seems to get too much spam and this site is slowly building up momentum after the list-server version from Sailnet was retired.

Great blog - good to see how you've outfitted Valis. Nice pics from Lyons imaging too. Link.

I got a kick out of seeing your Dorade self-portrait you took on your sail back - reminded me of my own pic (I was only crossing Lake Michigan!).

Thanks for the compliments (even though I suppose I was rather shamelessly fishing!)

Ted - yes the dorade vent is a great natural fish-eye reflector. I took a bunch of photos with it before even thinking to wipe off the salt spray. It was the only way my little waterproof camera could get a shot ot the twin jibs. My previous camera had a wide-angle attachment that I really miss. 2008 return-trip crewmember Paul Carson had a very nice SLR-style camera with real lenses and filters, and he took some spectacular shots. I'm going to be asking him for advice, but I'm afraid you can't buy talent!

It's nice to see the old PSC mailing list gang is still around. I also posted to the Yahoo group, and have received a few replies there too. I don't mind checking both places but it would be nice to have the PSC activity consolidated. Is there a concensus that Sailnet is now the place?

VALIS has a few more miles on her now, but she still spends too much time in the slip. I'm very likely going to compete in the 2010 Pacific Cup, and in 2009 we're thinking about bashing up the coast from San Francisco to Seattle/Vancouver/San Juan Islands. We would stay there for a few weeks than head back home. Along the way we might join the "Oregon Offshore" race from the Columbia River to Vancouver, and might do the Swiftsure race while we're visiting Vancouver. Or we might just skip the races and cruise.

Then again, I've got this quick six-month South Pacific itinerary all worked out -- it's just a matter of wanting to be away from home and family for that long (they would fly out and join me along the way, but it is still a huge chunk of time to be gone.) Mind you, I'm not complaining!

Regards,

Valis

Immediately recognized Valis on the cover of Sail. Certainly a wonderful vessel.
