PSC 34 Engine Mounts
 
If any PSC owners have ever changed out their engine mounts, would you kindly share your experience with me. What vendor and type mount did you use, and if you changed it yourself (which I'm hoping to do) how did you raise the engine? Did you have to disconnect the transmision? Are there any other details one should know.

Engine mounts are more specific to the engine than they are to the boat. What engine does your boat have fitted?

I just replaced the mounts on my Yanmar 3HM35F two months ago. I did all the work my self so I have taken the hard road, but it is well worth it. I know the procedures well and can allign the engine again with no problems. Installing the new mounts is not bad. The engine re-allignment was the most difficult part for us.

I researched the availble aftermarket mounts and decided to use the Yanmar mounts. In the end, it was an easy choice. I checked with three Yanmar distributors, a Yanmar mechanic, and my manual and all confirmed the 3HM35F uses four #100 mounts. This is important because some of the small engines used different mounts front and back. I can give you the Yanmar part # but I don't have it in front of me right now.

Please forgive me, but it is late and my wife and I have been traveling in our boat up the Tombigbee River for the last seven days to get out of harms way for hurricane season. I talked to several mechanics before undertaking the project. I had one mechanic flat out lie to me and try to rip me off. It will be a long frustrating processs, but I am so glad I did it myself.

Four years ago I replaced the engine mounts under my 3HM35F engine. The bolt in the forward port mount had broken, we were cruising, and I was away from my more serious tools. A mechanic did most of the work; I was a watcher and helper. The new mounts were Yanmar. We separated the engine coupling and lifted the engine with a PortaPower hydraulic jack placed under the oil pan. We took the opportunity to replace the lag screws into the engine beds with new stainless screws. The re-alignment was not difficult although up/down errors were easier to correct than side to side errors especially with the relatively flexible mounts.

Agreed, the Yanmar mounts are good. Not only the alignment when you change the mounts, but every time you put the boat back in the water. Very hard to get yourself to do this, but the best thing you can do for your engine.

Change lags to bolts/nuts
 
I'm restoring an '86 37. Has anyone replaced their motor mount lag bolts with machine thread bolts and nuts? I'm not sure how I would get to the underside to access the nuts, but lag bolts can strip out after time.

If your lag bolts have stripped out, a possible fix is to cut four short lengths of angle iron, drill and tap one side of each for two machine screws that will hold each engine mount in place, drill the other side for two bolts or lag bolts to enter the engine bearing members from the side, then attach the pieces of angle iron to the engine bearing members. We looked at doing this on my boat. If memory serves, the forward pieces of angle iron could be thru bolted in place and the aft ones could be secured with lag screws. My old holes were good, and we just used slightly longer stainless lag screws.

If the lag bolt holes are stripped,mine were, you can drive an epoxy coated dowel into the hole and then drill a new lag bolt hole or as Bill said if the holes are OK then slightly longer lags will work.

My motor mount holes seem to be in good shape. I just like through bolting better than lag bolts. That said, does anybody know how long the originally installed lag bolts are supposed to be? Just wondered if previous owners have installed longer lag bolts already.
