I installed a Lavac a few years ago. I believe I added a valve in the compartment behind the head but I was able run the hoses so that the pump that is normally used to pump out the holding tank could be used to pump the head clean. With the valves properly switched I can pump the Lavac into the holding tank or directly overboard or pump the holding tank overboard.

The Lavac has been low maintenance, but I do get flac for the moisture that is left on the toilet seat. So it's on the project list to replace.

Marc,

Thanks for the info, sounds like a good setup. Interesting about the moisture on the seat, otherwise I assume that you're happy with the Lavac.

I also had heard about this "moisture on the seat" problem but in two years have had none of it. I'm sure we'd both feel it and hate it so perhaps they changed the design of the gaskets??? Because we don't get soggy bottoms, we love the toilet.

Moisture on the seat thing is interesting. I've never noticed it before but last weekend , sure enough, there it was but only when we were first on board. It didn't reappear after each flush. I'll be interested to see next weekend.

We don't pump the Lavac dry when we leave the boat but our current mooring has very bad wash from the passing parade of stink boat morons who seem to think it amusing to go past a mooring field at 30 knots. We sometimes leave our dinghy on the mooring for the weekend and have come back to it partially swamped. That amount of rocking and rolling during the last couple of weekends when we were not on board could be the cause perhaps ?

Other possibility ...condensation ?

Knowing how tightly these things seal, condensation would be my guess...

Here's our's, FWIW:

Please pardon me, whilst I tidy up...

Lavac pump placement

We did this last year:

We fitted the pump on the inside of the cupboard under the sink, placing it on the left wall next to the head. I sits just above the moulded ridge, far back enough so that the handle can be left in place and moves between the sink drain and the locker door. We need to push the handle starboard to close the locker door because we have a toilet paper holder there too.

Most of the work was fitting the white plastic sanitation hose. We used hot water to soften it but it was still really hard. Anyone got any tips for next time?

Moisture on seat...

Try pumping slowly, full strokes. Seriously, most people pump too vigorously causing splashing in the bowl.

Re hose; Use the more expensive hose (various brands);
Poly X Sanitation Hose or similar. Much more flexible.

When we redid Raven's hoses we still ended up using boiling (or just past boiling) water. The secret there, seems to be keeping the hose in the water until the last possible moment. I actually stuck the hose into a kettle and left it there while the water boiled then carried kettle and hose to the head. I also tried the Wombet's hair dryer (12v) but it simply did not have enough grunt. I'd be thinking that if you have access to mains power then a good mains voltage hairdryer might just work.

Six months after redoing the hoses the seacock died. I had one of the blokes at the yard help me fit the new one and he simply hit the hose with a heat gun. Crude but effective, though you need to be careful.
