Christmas present - WIB Crealock's Vagabonding Under Sail

Merry Christmas to all.

I'd like to report on an early Christmas Present a friend gave me, inspired by the passing of WIB Crealock.

His "Vagabonding Under Sail" is out of print, but it's possible to obtain copies from used book clearinghouses such as Alibris.com, or even via Amazon.com.

I'm not all the way through it yet, but I'm very impressed with Mr. Crealock's wonderful way of describing the adventures he and three other young Brits took from England to the Carribean and beyond, with many stops along the way.

It seems he's left us not only with some beautifully designed sailing vessels, but also with some excellent stories as well. For me, his writing style echoes the pleasant and warm character often attributed to the man himself. I enjoyed his tasteful and well played sense of humor.

Although his adventures took place a number of years ago, I'm finding his descriptions of what life is like when undertaking a voyage like this nevertheless still very informative (e.g., fitting out a ship, dealing with other crew, weather and sea states, arriving in unfamiliar foreign ports, dealing with officialdom, the highlights and lowlights of various ports of call, experiencing the range of human nature found in various locals, descriptions of some of the breathtaking scenery to be encountered, managing language issues - money issues - equipment breakdowns, interacting with different cultures along the way, etc. etc.).

I also received copies of "Cloud of Islands By Sail to the South Seas" and "Toward Tahiti". I haven't started these yet, but I'm expecting more of the same.

If you enjoy reading and are interested in knowing a little more about WIB Crealock, I'd like to recommend his books.

Happy holidays and best wishes to all.
