Sealing 3" hole in PSC deck near mast
As it's quite chili up here in the Great Lakes in the Spring / Fall, I've picked up a Dickinson propane cabin heater. I'll be installing it on the port side bulkhead of a PSC '34, hear the mast. The installation calls for cutting a 3" hole through the deck for the air intake / exhaust pipe.
How should I deal with sealing the deck for a hole this large, with an epoxy plug similar to what would be done for bolt holes, or is there is a better approach? Should I drill a slightly larger hole (maybe 3.25"), epoxy, then drill the 3" hole in the epoxy?
Any other lessons learned from those who've installed a cabin propane heater?
After cutting out the hole with a hole saw, remove the core adjacent to the hole to a distance outward from the hole equal to the thickness of the core. Paint the resulting groove with epoxy and then fill it with epoxy thickened to the consistency of peanut butter. Duct tape the edge of the hole to prevent the thickened epoxy from sagging. Sand when the fill has cured. [remove tape first]. Finish by glassing edge of cutout with a layer of finish cloth , like 2" 10 oz. fiberglass tape. Trim excess glass. Install bedded fitting.
