Raw water for galley sink

My 1988 PSC 31 has the small brass galley sink faucet plumbed to the fresh water tank via a foot pump. Do others have the same? Is this the factory installation or did a PO change it from raw water to fresh? Previous boats I have sailed had raw water in that position and while it is nice to have fresh water from a foot pump when doing short cruises, I would prefer to have raw water for long trips away from shore, or better yet a Y-valve to choose between fresh and raw. Looking under the galley sink I see no hose coming in from a thru-hull. Any ideas?

We too have a 1988 PSC 31, Hull # 26.

There are two foot pumps. One for freshwater to a faucet in the left hand sink. The other to a faucet on the right hand sink.

The raw water intake is a seacock below the sink.

Fresh water comes from the main supply.

On a longer cruises we tend to use the fresh water foot pump instead of the pressure water system (which has its own faucet) because this conserves water and keeps me from so many trips in the dinghy to a shoreside water supply with my 6 gallon jugs.

We have only used the raw water pump in the Bahamas or the open sea as that is a relatively clean water supply, albeit salt.

Not sure if my two foot pumps are factory or prior owner installed.

Hope this fills in some balnks for you.

The Island Lady, 1989, #56, has the single brass faucet and foot pump plumbed to the fresh water. I believe that it came from the factory this way. No raw water intake. Also no pressurized water.

Thanks for the replies. Putting the 2 replies together I am guessing my 31 is like "Island Lady" with factory-installed fresh water foot pump with no seacock, whereas "Patty Ann" has been upgraded with a seacock under the galley sink and a second foot pump. I don't like the idea of putting more holes in the hull, but I am very tempted to install one for galley seawater for passagemaking.

I put a thru-hull in the galley. This serves a washdown pump that runs up the port side in the bulwark to the bow as well as a tee to the whale galley pump.

I had hull 83 and it only came with the freshwater foot pump at the galley, plus pressurized water. I installed a Seagull filter on the discharge of that freshwaterfoot pump and it made a world of difference for us. Tank water never seemed to be drinking water quality but with the Seagull we always had pure, odorless water for drinking or cooking.

My factory install has freshwater on right side, saltwater on left, pressure
at the middle. I use the saltwater a lot, I use it to rinse/soak the dirty dishes.
So I end up using very little freshwater for dishes.
I average around 1-1.5 gals/day/person depending on the temperature.

If my aging memory serves, the very early PSC boats were fitted with both at the galley and fresh water only in the head, all manually pumped. I could be wrong, but that's something I seem to remember. On Jo Beth, it looks as if the prior owner disconnected the galley raw water in favor of the fridge intake.

Regardless, we plan to restore raw water to the galley for the exact reasons mentioned by Tom in the post above.

Steve,

Thanks for your photo and input, and others' too. I also would like to install a wash down pump but was wondering where to get the water. I was thinking of using the toilet intake, but your idea sounds better, since I also need seawater at the galley sink.

Where have you put the pump for the wash down and how is it controlled? I don't have a windlass so no wiring in the bow yet. Where do you attach the hose for the wash down? Any more pictures?

Thread detour : Any other anchor wash down solutions on 31's?

Larry,

My boat also came with a Seagull filter on the galley foot pump, but I haven't been keeping a cartridge in it because I kept forgetting to remove it when winterizing, and it got saturated with antifreeze and ruined. Your testimonial makes me want to give it another try since the tank water always tastes like a garden hose, or worse. (expensive little cartridges though, even the off-brand ones).

I had a second through hull in the engine compartment, t-ed off of it and mounted the washdown pump on the little shelf at the aft end of the engine compartment. I ran the hose up to a garden hose fitting on the lower aft bulkhead of the cockpit, by your leg if you are sitting. I also purchased one of those spring coil hoses long enough to reach the bow. Electrically, I wired it to a spare breaker on the panel. It worked like a charm. I just did not think I could run the hose and install a fitting forward so my arrangement was perfect.
