The temperature alarm or gauge is not enough to protect you from damage caused by a raw water blockage. If it is blocked when the engine is cool, you will burn out your muffler before the engine gets hot enough to sound the alarm. I am putting a temperature alarm on my exhaust.

The stat begins to open at 160 and is fully open at 185. It took full load and warm seawater for me to be fully open once I had the newer exchanger. The hot water heater never had a problem, even with extended powering. However the mixing valves were not that good and you had to be wary of hot, hot water at the sink or shower.
