Guys,
I would be happy to take you both out for a sail. I'm on the Chesapeake near Annapolis. Unfortunately, two circumstances conspire to prevent me from doing it anytime soon:
a) Our boat is presently hauled out for the annual maintenance regime (teak, bottom paint, wax topsides, etc). She won' be back in until late-August or so.
b) I am recovering from surgery and won't be back on my feet for a while. At this point, I'm not sure when I'll be out sailing again. Maybe September?
So, sorry, I may not be of much immediate help. But I'm happy to answer questions in the meanwhile.
P.S. Loos, to the best of my knowledge, the "a" in "dorade" is pronounced with a long vowel, as in "lemonade." I've never heard it pronounced differently. Dorade was the name of a boat on which these ventilators first appeared.

FWIW, I've always pronounced it with a long "a".

Willing to answer questions, just the sort of bloke I'm looking for! Okay then, here are a couple more if ye have the patience!
Rode... Long "o" here as well?
Since you are from Annapolis area, do you happen to know this boat?
1998 Pacific Seacraft - reduced ! ESTATE SALE Sail Boat For
More specifically, and please recognize I have no experience with these bigger boats, (I come from dinghyland), I spoke with someone with a good deal of experience, and he said asking prices on boats are often highly inflated. And that while many boat types cannot be had for NADA values, that he was generally unwilling to offer more in most cases. Now, he seemed a very frugal sort to be sure, but a grEAt guy nonetheless. Is it your experience that a Pacific Seacraft will ordinarily sell far above NADA? I checked on the above boat (at least I think), it was listed as PSC 34/CT (don't know what the CT is..) Anyway, it had it at $90-100K, which is $50k under the asked for price. Would a $95k offer be even worth the effort?
When do you consider the season over? Not sure if it is pointless to buy a boat this year anymore or not, when the value would only drop, and it would need to be stored for the winter anyway, insured, etc. Any thoughts on this appreciated... So much to consider! I want one, I want one, I want one, but.... Anyway, thanks very much for the offer, perhaps when you get her back in we can all hook up for a sail. It's all so daunting. How can one possibly try out all the different boats in a reasonable amount of time before taking the plunge? For now anyway, I am hooked on PS, though I've never been on one! Love the Morris' also, but out of my range. Lovely 28 foot one on Yachtworld. Okay, I admit it, I don't know what the hell I'm doing!
Btw, sorry, don't mean to hijack your thread Al.

Rode, yes, long "O".
I have no specific knowledge of that particular 34 to which you linked. I did browse the listing, and it appears to be very well equipped and in good condition. I will also say, generically, that the '90's vintage PSCs are extremely well regarded. These were the very heydays for PSC, when much time, care, and expense were invested in building a solid, quality boat.
As for the NADA prices, in my opinion they are completely detached from reality, at least so far as these PSC boats go. As near as I can tell, NADA applies a straight line depreciation formula to boat values, much like they use with automobiles. This might work for some brands, but it generally fails to reflect upgrades, maintenance, and brand- or model-specific market conditions that can greatly influence boat prices.
It's probably only a slight exaggeration to say that you couldn't even buy the hardware and sails that are on that Crealock 34 for the quoted NADA prices, much less assemble it all onto a working sailboat with hull and deck.
That's not to say that some distressed seller somewhere might not let a boat go well below it's normal market value. Or a bank could sell off a repo cheap. But looking at the listing for that 34, and knowing the quality of these boats, I would say even at the present asking price it represents very good value. I wouldn't expect to get it much cheaper than that. If it's beyond your price range, I'd suggest look for an older example.
P.S. In this case, "CT" stands for "cutter".

NADA = National Automobile Dealers Association
Take that for what's it's worth when it comes to placing a value on used boats.

AlLorman,
I am not in the Chesapeake, but if you find yourself in coastal South Carolina I would be more than happy to take you for a sail.
