Yanmar 4JH2E External Fuel Pump

Our 1995 37' has a Yanmar 4JH2E. There is an external fuel pump for filling the Racor. It has ceased to work and I cannot determine what type it is, who makes it, etc. It had a label, but fell off at some point.

Thumper at PacSea doesn't know, and said that the pump comes with the engine package. I haven't been able to get a response from Yanmar to date.

Does anyone know what this thing is? Or what a comparable replacement would be?

We have a 4JH2E and it does not have an external fuel pump which leads me to believe someone has added one to your fuel system. It really makes no difference what you have presently as any fuel pump of sufficient capacity can't hurt. The fuel flow rate is specified in the engine service manual. PM me if you don't have one and I'll look it up.

Most probably an old Walbro 6xxx series, search for Walbro and FRB-13 which is a replacement.

I got a response from Yanmar North America. They directed me to Boatswain's Locker in Costa Mesa, CA. The service rep there was very helpful and actually spent a good bit of time looking through the old PacSea orders, which only went back to 1999.

After much looking, we figured out that it was a Walbro 2401 bellows style pump, which has since been discontinued. The closest thing is either a Walbro FR series reciprocating pump, the FRD-1 or the FRB-13 as Tom noted, both have USCG approval, the FRB-13 has the salt spray test approval in addition.

Stewart-Warner also has a 235A-D pump which fits the bill.

We have the same type of arrangment on our 1995 37, hull 301..... I have an identical spare pump in my stash and it is a Walbro WEP 12. Other markings on the package

Out of interest.... where is the switch for your pump? Is it a pull switch (similar to the macerator or shower pump) located underneath the battery selector in the quarterberth?

There is no switch in our system. The pump comes on when the engine key is in the on position and stays on (as needed). There is a fuse adjacent to the pump, and under the assumption that it is a flow through pump while running or not (per specs and the dealer rep) I may just take the fuse out to cut down on pump wear since the only time I'm going to use it is to refill the RACOR, in which case I'll be down in the hole anyway.

Interesting..... I think I may need to follow some wires and find out what's going on.

If it's just the bellows in your pump that's gone, I see there are rebuild kits available

Thanks Dave! You may have saved me $120. At least until it breaks again at which point I'll hopefully be gainfully employed. Not sure if the bellows kit is what it needs, but worth the $22 to find out.

I have the same issue and a replacement is being put on today. Boat's in Kemah and I'm in Corpus Christi, so I can't test it, but I do expect a call from the mechanic later once it's on and working. If it works, I'll make another post with details.
