Bow roller-anchor attachments

I recently purchased a 1988 PS37. I have 35 lb Delta and 45 lb CQR on dual bow roller. Holes for retaining pins do not align with bow roller holes (and the use of horizontal retaining pins has been discouraged because they could become bent and stuck by anchor movement in a seaway).
Question: How have others secured similar anchors to bow rollers/fore decks?

Hi jkf, Welcome to Sailnet!

On our 31, we have two short, coated-wire pendants that are secured to the lower rail in the bow pulpit on one end, and have a shackle in the other end. The shackle is secured through the hole in the crown of the anchor (the one for the trip line/anchor buoy.)

Take a look at the 02/24/2009 thread "Ground Tackle Upgrade".

Large Pin Loading

We have pins, and like them. I couldn't find the ground tackle thread, but read Rockna's recommendations, and have to believe that it may be more in the design and arrangement of the pin securing mechanism than a general pin concept in and of itself.

A quick deflection analysis of our pin arrangement, 0.375" dia SS pin on 6" supports with the anchor more or less in the middle, would require the equivalent head of ~20 ft of water to produce a 0.25" deflection in the pin. Based on that, it looks like, while possible, it's in the statistical tail that you'd hit a wave hard enough to bend the pin to the point that it can't be removed, if it is designed properly.

Of course, poorly designed and built stuff breaks all the time.

We've hit some hard waves, big steep ones that roll over the dodger, and have never had any deflection serious enough to jam it. And as far as the Rocna's website suggestion that it be lashed goes, if the seas are heavy and consistent enough to bend a 1/4"-3/8" stainless steel rod, it is reasonable to believe it's enough to chafe through any fiber lashing at the bow.

All that said, a proper bowsprit/pulpit and roller arrangement that allows the flukes to ride under the roller, should prevent most vertical translation when coupled with a tight chain stopper, devil's claw, snubber, etc.

I do like the wire rope and shackle idea for where the pins and pin brackets don't meet and think I'll use it until I can get someone to TIG some new SS brackets on for the Bruce.

securing bow anchors

Thanks to everyone for their input. Wire pennants from the bow pulpit rail may be easiest. This would prevent primarily forward/downward movement of the anchor (ie. self deployment). I would still need to tie down the anchor shank to prevent it from bashing against the foredeck. (In contrast, a pin, through the anchor shank could lift it above the foredeck and prevent essentially any movement).

Ryan (SV Argo), do you have photos of your set up?

John,

I don't have any photos of our setup, but if I have a chance this week, I will take a couple.

Depending upon where the shank of your anchor rests on deck, you might be able to use these: Anchor Lock
