Things Bill Crealock Told Me

In the PSCs - Wet vs. Dry thread, Dave mentioned that Bill Crealock told him that the interior volumes of the PSC 34s and 37s are similar. This inspires me to ask those of you who have meet Bill Crealock directly if you would care to share anything notable he may have conveyed to you, or anything you took away from the experience. I understand he was universally regarded as a warm and caring individual, well spoken and well informed technically.

I never had the pleasure of meeting him in person before he passed, but I have read his books: 'Cloud of Islands', 'Vagabonding Under Sail', and 'Towards Tahiti'. I found his writing style to be as skilled as his boat designs and very entertaining. Many of the world-cruising anecdotes and lessons he conveys are as relevant today as when he wrote them many years ago. The books are out of print now, but I was able to easily obtain them on the used book market via the internet.

I notice a profile of him from the September 1993 issue of Crusing World at:
Sailboat Designs of William*Crealock

. . . and another at:
W.I.B. Crealock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

. . . and an article concerning his passing at: William Crealock; Designer of yachts loved boats, adventure - SignOnSanDiego.com

We had the opportunity to meet Bill Crealock at several rendezvous over the years. He was truly a Class act a real gentleman and a very knowlegable sailor and designer. He spoke about the design competition for which he designed the C37.He wanted to design a fast very seaworthy boat that also looked beautiful. He had previously designed the Westsail 32 that was THE cruising boat at the time and he wanted to improve upon it in all respects.
His most important criteria was to design this boat for THE WORST DAY IN THE OWNERS LIFE-THE DAY THAT ITS SO BAD THAT HE THINKS HE MAY DIE- and then to bring him home.
He succeeded!
