throttle and shift cables

I would like to replace my throttle and shift cables. Is there a 31 owner who knows the length of the cables? I would like to pull the new cable in as I pull the old ones out.

I have the old Yanmar 3gm30F but I doubt that anyone with the new Yanmar has replaced any cables this soon.

There are no identifying marks on the old cables but I am guessing the old ones are no longer made anyway. If someone has replaced them, what cables did you use?

Take out the old cables (keeping track of all the little bits at the ends of the cables), measure their total length, and round up to the nearest foot. Google "teleflex control cables" and find the ones that are the right length and with the ends that match what your have (they will most likely be TFXtreme with "universal" ends). Or, take them to your nearest/favorite diesel mechanic and he'll sell you a set at about twice (or thrice) the price you would have paid online. Buy a box of BandAids for the scraped knuckles you'll get putting them back on (or is that just me?), and install the new cables.

I would not do it that way! I think your first instinct to install the new as you pull the old is correct. When I removed my stop cable, I had a very hard time feeding the new cable down through the "tunnel" next to the shaft. People have had good success by calling the factory to get information about the cables.

I replaced mine about four years ago. I tried to look at my order history with defender but it doesn't go back quite far enough.
I pulled mine out to measure and left a pull string in place to pull the new ones in. The only place that is challenging is where Larry says next to the shaft where they disappear behind fiberglass.

cables

Thanks for the advice. I think I will go the messenger route too. It will take longer but I can watch out for sharp bends etc while I am pulling the messenger line.

Figuring out the ends is a pain but all worked out well in the end for the engine stop cable. The only nasty part is having to take the helm apart for the throttle and shift cables.
