Mystery panel in PSC 31 head

Can anyone tell me what this large teak panel in the head of my 31 is for? There doesn't seem to be anything on the other side (in the cockpit over the bridge deck), but it is obviously an expensive thing to build, so I assume it has some purpose. I just don't have a clue.

Many thanks.

(There's supposed to be a photo here, but I have my doubts.)

I wondered about that every year that I owned my 31, never asked the factory, and never figured it out.

It is just trim. The only thing behind it is the fiberglass part of the deck that forms the recess to the companionway. The fore and aft bulkhead that it is attached to is located under the companionway recess and cockpit sole for support (just like the post on the other side of the companionway) so the teak is there to cover up the raw fiberglass that protrudes into the head.
It is an expensive way to do that but then again a Pacific Seacraft is an expensive way to build a boat.
