PSC37 Campbell Sailer Prop.. any advice
 
I am investigating changing out the fixed 2-blade standard prop with a Campbell prop on a Pacific Seacraft 37. I like the concept of simplicity vs the feathering props.

Do any of the PSC37 owners have good or bad things to say on how they work and what they like or dislike about the motoring & docking characteristics? If there is an advantage to sailing (less drag?) that is obviously of great interest too. Thanks.

Campbell Prop
 
I purchased one 2 years ago for a direct drive set up.
I read a lot of good things but..
It didn't work out, sent back to reduce diameter and pitch. 150.00 more.
I am dialed in with the right number for the campbell except the prop cavitates and the boat slows down above 1700 rpm. They want me to send it back again, end up with a less that desired result.
Trying to get them to respond to an email a took a lot or persistence on my end.

I am buying a max prop for next year. I have seen so many good results. I should have gone with my gut and bought the max prop in the first place.

Don't waste your money by a decent prop the first time.

i and my wife. have a 37 ft pacific seacraft. i install a campbell sailer 3 blade on our boat. it has the right pitch and are very happy with it. we have to deal with current here. also. at 2200rpm we can motor a 5knots or better. stops the boat also. i think the dealer is in canada. is it better to have a fixed prop. i dont know, that is all i would use for the price.

Campbell prop
 
We have had a Campbell prop on our PS37 since we repowered in 2006.On delivery the prop was over-pitched and had to be repitched.The company has been difficult to deal with and do not often return phone calls.I eventually had to have the prop repitched by a local prop shop.
It did have plenty of thrust but loaded the engine too much and wouldnt allow the engine to reach max RPM.Also at low speed the prop caused vibration in the engine. The repitch did help .As far as drag I don't think that the Campbell was any worse than the 2 blade fixed prop that it replaced.

I discussed props for my PSC 34 with Nigel Calder. He strongly urged me to go with Max Prop. He said the drag was not insignificant.

Thanks for the input on re-propping my PSC37. I hope to decide on which way to go shortly & have read the good and bad about both the Max Prop Campbell Sailer. I guess it just depends on if I plan on staying in US waters or head off to Mexico next year. Still like the simplicity of a fixed prop.

I have pulled many, MANY more fixed-blade props for damage repair than folding or feathering props. In fact, I can't think of a single instance where I've seen a folding or feathering prop with a dinged or bent blade. Sure can't say that about fixed-blade props.
