Well, 'new-to-us' at least.
A friend of ours has a 2011 SeaFrost BDXP air-cooled, cold plate system, lightly used, only in his boat for about 6 months. He's decided to go with an entirely different system and configuration and knowing our headaches with our ancient Adler-Barbour water-cooled system, offered it to us at a very cool (pardon the pun) price.
After measuring the icebox, I'm satisfied the system will work beautifully, but I do have one question - where to install the compressor and fan? Ideally, I'd like to put it just aft of the icebox in the large port side sail locker. But, for those of you that have air-cooled refrigeration on an older 34, where is your compressor/fan system installed? We're open to suggestions...
Factory air cooled AB install on a '97 PSC 34 as per the attached pic. Notice the cutout for venting to the cockpit; there are two of these cutouts (you can't see the lower one of the same size/shape in this pic). In the cockpit, there's a small stainless grill that covers these cutouts. Downside of this approach is - if cockpit were flooded, the cutouts would allow water into the locker. At some point, I plan to fabricate removable plugs for the cutouts for use in rough conditions.
Thanks for the info; we've considered the same location for our compressor as well as that's where our friend has it installed in his boat, which is not a PSC. My concern with the install in the locker is, as you mentioned, water. Putting it close to the icebox, which puts it forward instead of aft, will still have the same issue.
One thought I've been tossing about is to install it in that locker, but vent it into the engine compartment. Not sure if that will work or not; we're to take possession of it this Sunday.
We have engine drive cold plate refrigeration with a 125v condensing unit for backup when we are in marinas. The condensing unit is like MC1's, mounted on a shelf at the aft end of the port cockpit locker. There is a vent from the locker to the space under the seat at the aft end of the cockpit of our tiller steered boat. The vent is a 4" bronze deckplate with a screw in cover. Inside the hole is a 125v computer fan which runs when the compressor runs to force the hot air out of the locker. In nasty conditions we screw the plate in to seal off the hole. In the usual rain and wind the seat serves as a roof over the hole and protects it.
