PSC 31 access to transom locker

PSC 31 owners:

i have an '89 PSC 31---I think the diaphragm in my shower sump pump is bad. The pump can empty the shower sump in about 15 minutes; the line blows clear and the little in line filter which is just upstream of the pump is also clear. There is a through hull well above the water line and no seacock.

The pump is located high on the forward facing wall of the starboard side of the transom locker about as far from the hatch as you can imagine, above the little boxy storage space. I can barely get to the filter which is closer to the hatch and only requires one hand. there is no way to get at that pump from the hatch itself.

I suspect that if I remove the (winch handle shelf) insert in the cockpit coaming-that's what I use it for, you may call it something else, I can get at the pump through that gap. Has anyone removed this insert? It's held in by about 10 screws and some glue, I would guess, so I rather not break that seal if it won't help the situation.

Thanks for any ideas!

Elan

Re: PSC 31 access to transom locker

Hi Elan,
I cannot recommend another way to access your pump as my 31 is set up differently. I don't have a steering quadrant attached to my rudder post so my access is not bad.
Your coaming box may come off readily, if it was put in with 3M 5200 forget about it. One way to find out is to use a sharp narrow putty knife and see how easily you can cut through the "glue" in one small spot perhaps on the bottom edge.
If you are able to get the coaming box out then I would give some thought to relocating the pump to a more accessible spot on the boat. My shower sump pump is under the sink in the head and goes overboard via a thru hull in the wet locker.

Steve:

That's odd. The pump under the sink in the head of my 31 (no. 55) is for the ice box drain. My shower sump pump is roughly in the same place as Elan's. Where is your ice box drain pump?

Hi Al,
There is a hand pump under the sink in the head for the ice box pump out.The ice box hand pump ties into the overboard drain for the head sink.
The shower sump pump under the head sink is a handy location.

Al and Steve, turns out I can access the backing screws for the pump on the aft wall of the starboard lazerette, so no need to remove that coaming insert. I cut an access panel from that lazerette into the transom one and can now get at that pump.

My ice box pump is under the head sink too.

Hi Elan,
Sounds like a solid solution to your access issue, very nice.
