Quantity and storage for anchor chain for a Pacific Seacraft 31

Our 1989 PS 31 came with no windlass and almost no chain, just rode. We just bought a Lofranz horizontal electric windlass for 5/16 in HT chain and were wondering what all of you other 31 owners have for length and type of chain/rode, and where you store it. We are planning to cruise in Mexico and then the South Pacific, we hope, and have been told we need 300 feet of chain for deep anchorages and coral, but doubt that will fit in the forward chain locker, and will also make us bow heavy. What is the most amount of chain you carry, do you carry it all in the forward chain locker, has anyone made any modifications to carry more chain, what combos of chain/rode have worked for you, how have you dealt with the chain piling up on itself without deck access to the forward locker, and do you have any other tips or info you think would be useful? Thanks Cindy, Cool Change

Yes, of course. Brain freeze. I meant 5/16th. I corrected it. Thanks. Cindy P., Cool Change

Cindy,

I have 30 feet of chain (5/16 HT if I remember correctly) and 300 feet of rope.

Thanks, John. I assume it all fits into your forward chain locker?

I too would like to hear how much 5/16" chain can fit in the 31's anchor locker. Just bought
a 31 and the locker looks pretty shallow/small. Do folks have to often run below to un-pile chain as it comes in? Thanks.

If you have not already, check out

Voyage of the Swan - A Pacific Seacraft 34 is Selected, Outfitted and Cruised Offshore

The boat is a 34, but it is not that much different from a 31. There is a lot to be learned on the site.

I have 40 feet of chain and 300' of rope and it all fits in the locker with room to spare. I don't have to go below to load it in. I don't have a windlass and lower the rode down the pipe by hand. Occasionally have to give it a little poke with my hand to knock over the pile to make room for more.

Thanks Paul. That helps with the rode capacity. I intend using all chain rode for my primary anchor so curious mostly about how many feet of all chain will fit.
