Question Pearson 34...shift cable

The shift cable is no longer functioning... started to take it out to see what length etc. was needed. Ran into (for me) a problem....getting the darn thing loose from the helm post.... there is a small bolt that I believe holds the cable stable.... located about half way down the steering tube....of course, there appears to be a "nut" on the inside of the post......very hard to see inside. Any mechanics that have a suggestion on what I can doooo......?
