Heavy Listing to PORT !
 
My P35, Centerboard is listing heavily to port. It's not a weight issue... it takes a ton to do what's going on now... my fat ass doesn't even do it and I'm 210.

I repaired a crack that was leaking water this winter and upon inspecting and drilling a bigger hole to repair the problem properly I found a mysterious cavity full of water. I pumped all the water out. This was on the starboard side of the Centerboard housing which dissects the hull from midships on... to the stern of the housing is the deep-equally-shared-on-both-sides-of-the-hull bilge.

So, im thinking maybe i pumped out the starboard's 40year intake of water from who knows where into the formerly sealed compartment. And now shes listing the port side and I have to drill and pump out the ports 40year intake of water...

The ballast is not a problem of weight. Nothing has shifted and Ive been sailing her for 3years. Holding tank is 8gallons and no water appears to be in any of the lockers. no leaks.

Any thoughts would greatly help. Thanks!

I have no practical advice to give but what you discerned makes good sense to me. I am curious as to how you will fix this issue.

If you can take a tap hammer, or anything similar, and go tapping along those compartments on both sides of the boat, you should be able to hear a distinctly different tone if the other compartment is indeed full of water.

Your options then would be to haul and drain, or drill and try filling with urethane foam. Which sets up underwater.

Why on earth would you build a boat with sealed, hollow compartments? Sounds like a terrible idea to me.

Or a convenient way to fair a keel stub onto the hull, creating dead spaces as collateral damage.

Maybe you've never noticed, inaccessible empty places are normal in automobiles, too. Sometimes the price of access fittings isn't worth the access. Same thing in many or most homes and apartments in the US, empty pipe chases, drop ceilings and fake bulkheads to box out around vents and conduits...lots of dead space, sealed off, is normal practice.

I'm confused where this is exactly? Can you post a pic? Is this the midship bilge? On my 1979 P35 I am able to access this right through the cabin floor hatches. Or are you saying it's ever further down under the bilge floor?

On ours (Hull 443) that midships area doesn't completely flow to the aft bilge. To completely dry this out I hand pump it out. Usually fills up when the shower sump overflows or after a heavy rain via the anchor locker. Completely full, that area is 4 or 5 gallons at the most before it flows into the aft bilge.
