Vc 17

I bought a fresh water boat and brought it down to the sea, It has Interlux VC 17 fresh water bottom paint on it. I am told that I have to sand it completely off before I can use a salt water bottom paint. Anyone have any thoughts on this? The bottom is in good shape, what happens if I just paint over the VC 17? Do the bottom paint police fine me or do I run a real risk of blistering the hull glass? Is there a compatable salt water paint I use?
I don't have the time to sand it myself and you would not beleive what the yard gets to do it, they say sanding alone will take 40 hours. Thanks in advance,
Rick

VC 17 has a Teflon additive. You should remove all of it as your new bottom paint will not adhere. Since it is so thin, sanding with 120 to 180 paper should get most off. You'll need to use a good degreaser/wax remover product after that. Acetone will also help. Remember to wear a good respirator during this whole process of sanding and wiping. Good Luck.
