1978 Pearson 31 Comments

Hello considering a 1978 Pearson 31 and can not find much data on this boat on only the 31-2 whats the difference? Boat is priced right My last boat was an Ercison 27. Mainly looking to sail lake Michigan maybe do the Mac one year if I get the boat out fitted correctly. Any owners out there have an opinion on how to they sail?

The Pearson 31 and 31-2 are two completely different boats. Here's info on the older 31.

Thanks for the reply. Is that for better or worse in that they are entirely 2 different boats? Any insight into sailing characteristics particularly down wind? The SA/Disp of 16.79 is pretty good.

Re: 1978 Pearson 31 Comments

The 31-1 was kind of a strange bird with its extremely pinched stern, which led to a pretty cramped cockpit. I doubt it did much for downwind sailing characteristics either. The 31-1 was quickly replaced by the 32, which was a pretty nice boat (I used to own one).

If you are seriously considering the 31, check access to the stuffing box! I'm not sure why, but a few of the Pearson designers / builders did not give much thought to accessing it on a routine basis!

Re: 1978 Pearson 31 Comments

I have a 31-1 and I have to say that I love the boat. There are issues with the cockpit, but for my needs it fit the bill. I Love the boat and people have offered more money that what I paid for it.
