323 Storm Jib

A couple of questions regarding storm jibs for the P323:

1. How have others rigged sheet car tracks for the storm jib? On the cabin top? Use existing at toe rail with barber hauler? Other ideas that work?

2. Storm Jib size? Luff length? Leech length? Foot?

3. Does anyone have a like-new hank on storm jib for a 323 that is for sale…or have suggestions about where I can find one?

For my boat, which has a roller furling headsail, I plan to install a removable inner forestay with the deck fitting about 8-10 inches aft of the forestay (on the raised portion of the 323 deck in front of the anchor well). The inner stay will run roughly parallel to the forestay with the mast fitting 10-12 inches below the mast truck. During normal sailing the stay will be unrigged and pulled to the shrouds or toe rail for storage. When needed the headsail will be furled, the stay will be set, the storm jib hanked on, and then raised.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Richard,

Your website is great, your boat selection and purchase explanations address many questions have have populated Sailnet threads in recent weeks and should be required reading for first time buyers. If Sailnet had a FAQs page, you site should be the first link. I plan to read it all...

It was also a delight to see a boat maintained in the condition of Libations Too, you can't be spending too much time just enjoying libations...One question - how did you produce the bright interior teak finish - is this varnish? This is my next big project, but hopefully no varnish...

Your page mentions improving your night lighting. On my CS the light fixtures in the galley and chart table area are dual white/red, you might change the existing fitures rather than add additional. Here's an example http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?...20422&id=64138

As to trimming your storm jib, you should find that the clew is so high that it'll trim to the existing track or rail. I do believe that there is a best location for the inner forestay that provdes for the proper balance/flow between the storm jib and the triple reef main. I don't know how to figure this location, but on my 36 the inner forestay fitting is about three feet aft of the forestay. This location also allows the tang to be sistered to the bulkhead forming the back of the anchor locker, providing a more sturdy attachment than a deck plate. Here's a prior thread on the subject http://www.sailnet.com/forums/jeanne...light=forestay

Finally given how you use your boat, have you looked at adding an inside jib track? Such a track would give you a few extra degree of pointing and does affect any rating...sort of free performance.

Goodluck living the dream.

Sailingfool,

Thanks for the comments about Libations Too and my website. This admittedly is a labor of love, so your comments are appreciated.

To answer a few of your questions:
Interior brightwork is high gloss varnish. I am considering switching to low luster varnish for the teak and holly sole…though I do like the current appearance.

I also have the dual white/red dome light at my galley…just haven’t gotten that far at the nav station. I will probably switch to LEDs for all interior lighting as a means of saving electrons while cruising.

The Pearson 323 does not have a bulkhead associated with either the fore or aft faces of the anchor well, and neither would work well due to the smallish foredeck of the 323. I have seen some P424s with the inner forestay tied to an inner bulkhead, and that is what started me thinking about how I could do this on the 323. What I found was that there were no convenient anchoring points…so I just moved it as far forward as possible since I did not intend to use it to hoist a second head sail (as a cutter).

Inside jib track is something that I have not considered. I’d be eager to hear from other P323 owners who have tried this.
