P365 Ketch Head stay wire requirement

Hello Fellow Pearsonites

My 1976 P365 Ketch came with an all in one roller furling system (believe shaeffer) that did not use a seperate head stay. I now need to replace the roller furling system and therefore need to install a headstay wire. The original manual states a 3/8 in wire stay for a 41 foot J mast height (from deck to peak). This diameter wire seems unreasonably large considering the keel stepped mast and low Ketch main height. Having to install a 3/8 diameter wire will also drive up the cost of the furling system dramatically ($1K-1.5K). Reducing the headstay wire diameter to 5/16 or 9/32 will dramatically reduce the cost of the furling system. One rigger indicated that the diameter dimension of the clevis pin at the top and deck fittings are what determines the headstay wire dimension. I would greatly appreciate it if other P365 Ketch owners could weigh in on this and tell me what they have on their boats. Additionally do you know the headstay dimensions pin to pin.
Thanks for your help
Andy
