What transmission was used in a 1988 P27?

We have water in our 1988 Pearson 27's transmission and we are going to replace it with a new one (the surveyor found it on the pre-purchase survey so we knew). According to info found regarding the Universal M-12 engine (currently in boat) it should be the Hurth HBW-50 with a 2:1 reduction ratio. Is this correct? We need to order the new tranny, but need to know what the model is before ordering it and I cannot see the model number without removing it first, but don't want to remove it until we have a new one..... Kind of a catch 22. So, if anyone can help out on this, I would greatly appreciate it. Also, if anyone has replaced their transmission on their boat, how did it go? Any problems? I am assuming that it can be replaced without having to remove the engine as it has pretty good access?

We have talked to a company about ordering the new tranny and they have said that the HBW-50 tranny has been replaced with a ZF5 tranny. Anyone install one of these?

Go to www.marinedieseldirect.com and ask the folks there. That's the website for Torresen marine, and they are dealers for Universal among other makes. Or even call them to be sure. They are good folks to deal with.

That is where I got the info about what transmission went with the Universal M-12. I am just trying to verify it with actual Pearson 27 owners.
