Centerboard cable/rope?

I need to replace the cable on my P-35 and was thinking, dangerous, of using Samson Amsteel rope instaid of SS cable. My thinking is Amsteel is 5400Lb and SS is 3700Lb breaking strengh, so it should be strong enough, and if I replace it every few years, as it should be easier to replace and fairly cheap, chafe shouldn't be to bad, and no more meat hooks on the drum,
Any other issues I'm missing?
Board is strapped up for now.

Um, I don't see any reason why not, my pennant is all rope. I have been thinking about replacing my lifelines with Amsteel.

Juniper,

Please take some photos when you swap out the cable! I would like to learn from your project.

Did you use the Amsteel three years ago? And has it held up? Have you looked to see if it is holding up okay? How do you connect it to the CB?

So far so good, just replaced some sta-set after 3 years, that was not worn anywhere, just put the amsteel in this spring, to hook to the c/b just splice and stich in a loop w/ a thimble just like the wire.
next the go is the lifelines then the standing rigging, I think ss wire has met it's match.

What diameter amsteel did you go with?

3/16" Amsteel (5400 lb rated) is the same size as the wire rope on my boat. But I am having second thoughts about using Amsteel for my CB, it would be exposed to UV on the deck. And the last SS wire rope 7x19 3/16" lasted me 25 years. I am improving on the design of the sheaves and blocks. Should be the last time I replace this or have any repairs on the sheaves. I think 20 to 25 years in a good span. But that is my setup, not typical of others.

Re: Centerboard cable/rope?

I switched to rope on my older O'day, and it held up well.

Attached with a narrow shackle from an O'day parts source. The only issue I had was the drum on the trunk that held the rope when the CB was up was sized for cable, and getting all that rope to fit was a challenge. Whereas the cable had some extra length the rope needed to be the exact length needed, with no extra. Your setup would most likely be different though.

Switched to Amsteel for the cable. Worked fine except the splice has such a long tail that that won't pass through the cable sheave. Board hangs down a few inches because of it.
