Pearson 28-2 Manual - Nearly incinerated boat!

Hi Folks,

Bought a 28-2 recently and ran the batteries down. Long story short, rewired a different battery in incorrectly. The wire between the starter and the house got very hot. Nearly started a fire. Whoops! Now, I THINK I've got it wired correctly, but not sure. But, I can't get the Yanmar Switch to even light up when I turn the key so I'm wondering if it is getting power anymore, or if there is a fuse for it somewhere - I couldn't find it.

So, if anyone has any ideas, or a manual for the 28 (I saw that a few people had them, but I couldn't PM because I'm a new user - weird rule!), but a wiring diagram or anything would help this ambitious newbie set on blowing up my boat as soon as possible!

And I know a few will say get an electrician. I did, he wasn't a whole lot of use and didn't figure it out. I know, I know - get a GOOD electrician. I'll do that, but I'd still like to learn.

Thanks for the PDF. Didn't quite have what I needed so still looking for the 28-2 manual.

Also, thanks for sending the other link. I'd seen that (I do do my research before posting) but couldn't get "accepted" to that user group - at least not yet. Also, I still need to do 5 posts to PM that guy. Actually, I guess I'm up to 2 now, if I just bump a couple of times...

Keep in mind that you very well may have cooked your batteries by shorting them out if they were connected improperly for a while. There may not be enough juice left to turn your engine over.
Another pitfall is you may have fried the diodes in your alternator so no battery charging even if you get your engine running.
New batteries and having your alternator serviced may be in your future. Clearly labeling your battery cables is a good idea.

Thanks Caleb. I've already bought one new battery (starter), and will watch for the charging. I'm probably going to use this opportunity to replace a lot of things.

I'm going to take a picture of how I have the starter wired at this point and ask around for any advice on that wiring since I'm still having a hard time figuring some of it out.

Got the manual!

Thanks justmike!

I was able to find a fuse from the starter ignition to the engine (underneath the engine) - although intact, it was pulled apart. Put that back together.

Next to it was a small blue wire that had also pulled apart at its crimp point. Put that back together. Still no light and no power at ignition.

Someone said something about jump starting the engine directly off the battery, but I'm not sure how to do that - just to see if the ignition was truly the problem - I needed to get another head unit anyways since my tach has is totally flakey.

Also - where should one buy one of these Yanmar b-type panels?
