MD11C replacement
 
I have Pearson 323 #102 with an MD11C, and need to repower, finally. Just today I discovered sea water in the oil, and grey muck clogging the breather cap where you put in new oil. I am thinking of a rebuilt Yanmar 30hp or a Beta 28. Has anyone any advice and/or experience replacing an MD11C in a 323?

I have a Pearson 323 as well, but have not repowered. At the moment I am looking for a replacement MSB transmission for MD11C. If you are looking to part out your motor let me know.

Hi Leroy,

I am moving as quickly as possible to get the old engine out of my boat. I need to time the actual removal from the boat with the arrival of the new one, which date I don't have as yet.

As for parts, you can have all you want for shipping costs, unless you want to pick them up. I also have brand new spare alternator that I never used, opting instead to refurbish the old one. You can have that too.

What is the hull number of your Pearson 323. Mine is #102.

Hi Leroy,

It is going to be about 2-3 weeks before I will have the parts out. Can you wait that long? It is a bigger job than I thought and I have yet to haul the boat for this job. I am working alone, and it looks like we may have a tropical storm coming near us as well.

You are my best bet so far. If you are worried about tropical storms then you are probably too far away for me to give you a hand. What did you decide to repower with? I would love to do it, but the budget doesn’t permit. Once you start I would think it might be a good idea to remove the transmission and vdrive. There are only 4 bolts to remove on the engine. It would cut some height give you some working room. Have you been to Pearson 323 - A wealth of information on the P323 ?

I am very familiar with the Pearson 323 website. I am in between deciding on a Beta 28 and a Yanmar 3YM30. Until today I was more or less locked into the Beta 28, but the mechanic that will be helping me with the install has come up with a Yanmar that is a couple of K less in price. I am getting a lot of help from Stanley of Beta Marine, but I let him know that it will be the end of this week before I do anything.

Yes it is very expensive, and you really have to want to keep your boat to do something like this. The cost will be from 1/3 to 1/2 the worth of the boat itself, and will add little value if I were trying to sell it.

I have >two years rebuilding this boat - something you never finish - and knew this day would come as the engine was on borrowed time anyway. We want to keep the boat as sailing is the basic reason we moved from Arizona to Florida, so I decided to go ahead with the repower.

I forgot to add that I am in process of trying to get the transmission and v-drive out. The worst part of this job is having to cut the fiberglass column out to get enough access room to remove the engine. I went down to the boat this morning to work on stripping parts off the engine, and spent an half the time trying to decide just where to make the cuts. I will glass in cleats to hold it in place when this job is done, but it will never look as good as it does now.

I will have plenty of help once I get it into the boat yard.

The Beta is a fine choice but check the availability. A guy from my club has been waiting weeks for one he ordered.

What about a little teak trim to bolt the column back in place?
