packing flax first time

I have a pearson 30 and believe its time to repack. The shaft is 7/8 and i forgot to measure the packing nut. DOes anyone know what the packing nut size would be? OR better yet what size flax i will need,,i should just take the extra trip and pull out the old packing to either measure it or the nut itself,,thanks for any input..

I don't know the size of packing you should use with a 7/8" shaft.
I'd get a couple of sizes: 1/8", 3/16", 1/4" say, and hope you are covered.
Read this link if you have never re-packed a stuffing box before: Re-Packing A Traditional Stuffing Box Photo Gallery by Compass Marine at pbase.com
He makes a recommendation as to the type of packing material you should use.
