Re: Fixed port light seal replacement

Tempered glass cannot be cut because the tempering puts the surface under tension and cutting that surface causes the glass to shatter. There are several options including laminated safety glass, lucite, which is strong, or plexiglass.Tempered glass could also be ordered but it will have to be custom made, and therefore expensive. Just make sure whatever you use is as strong as the original material .

Re: Fixed port light seal replacement

Thanks for the heads up, Dalober. I checked the google, and you are right. I guess the place we bought the glass from misled us. It's laminated though, which will reduce the risks if the glass is broken.

We are coastal cruisers, and the port glass is very easy to remove and install, so is there any harm in using the laminated glass? Or is tempered glass a must?

Would the catalina 30 window kit fit the 1973 P30 windows?

I'm about 95% positive that the aluminum window frame extrusuions are identical. I read all I could find on the blog sites at the time I bought mine. Threw the dice, and all went well. I would go for it. The only other choices you have are to try and get catalogs from the different glass supply industries and try to match the glazing and weather channel stripping to your frames. Good luck. Let me Know how it goes...

Yes, That is the kit I bought. Really has plenty of materials. Use caution taking the frames apart, then have two people to put them back together as the sealer will get all over your hands and you can't squeeze the frames together tight enough to replace the screws without someone holding the tension on it. A long woodworking/furniture clamp also comes in handy.

Re: Fixed port light seal replacement

One last question - What did you use to polish the port trim?
Mine is aluminum - not sure if a vigorous polish will ruin the coating..

Re: Fixed port light seal replacement

Hey Mike,

Was curious if the kit worked on your 1973 P30. I have a 1974 P30 & wanted to get the kit for my windows.

Thanks,

Haven't done it yet - this winter. It'll be part of a deck paint job.
