I would have thought that the first million bucks of ransom would have given the pirates some hope yet it didn't stop them. Instead it gave them motivation. So I'm not sure that a lack of hope has anything to do with it.

The latest Cruising World has an article of a couple and their time with pirates. It is seemingly no longer just a band or two, it has become an industry in which victims can be traded like stocks.
