The Latitude 38 article makes a valid general point about the problem of crime against cruisers and that the word 'piracy' is vastly overused to describe anything from true piracy (your vessel and its crew are attacked at sea or anchored and captured) to petty thefts. The imprecision of the usage does not help make the discussion of the problem(s - there are actually several) easier.

Big change in our status. we have decided that we cannot safely (in my mind) leave South Africa this season allowing for the time needed for my hand to recover from its injury. All typing is right-handed at this point. We will leave Ainia in SA and head north and west in the early southern summer ~Oct/Nov?

You can check OnAinia.blogspot.com for updates on our travels whenever I get around to it.

Re: Things getting interesting in Honduras...

My wife and I spend half the year at our house in the Bay Islands, Guanaja. I strongly suggest cruisers check it out, On the North side there is an anchorage in a nice little cove walking distance from a water fall and a little bar named Bo Bo's. The south east side has a little place called Grahms Key, It's awesome, google for photo's. You gotta dress down and not look so Yachty, bottom line with the Western Carribbean, I don't want to get into the need for protecting yourself, but the first line in that defense is keeping your boat humble and simple, nothing on deck, and not having a fancy dinghy. You may look sporty in the eastern Caribbean or on the east coast with the new gadget boat and expensive Dinghy, but it look's silly and invititng to theives on the CA coast. Row a beat up dory, Dull the paint job, wear the old t-shirt and no watch, but please visit the Bay Islands if your cruising the area.
