Cam

You are right bush didnt invent the idea. But he has done it more than 750 times by some counts which is considerably more than all three of the predecessors you cite combined. I didnt like it when they did it either and Bush has gone to greater extremes with it. The trend is very bad and even more so when you realize that such statements have no force of law whatever (or at least they shouldnt). If the next Prez is a Dem I wont like it if THEY do it either. It isnt how our system should work.

sck5 - so, as I was asking, is your life worse under Bush than Clinton? You've explained why you disagree with him, but I see no mention of how your life is worse or better.

Do you pay more taxes? Do you earn less? Do you have less healthcare? Do you get the drift of the question now? How are YOU worse off with Bush as President than with Clinton?

A Somalian arrives in Minneapolis as a new immigrant to the United States .

He stops the first person he sees walking down the street and says, "Thank you Mr. American for letting me in this country, giving me housing, food stamps, free medical care, and free education!"

The passerby says, "You are mistaken, I am Mexican."
The man goes on and encounters another passerby.
"Thank you for having such a beautiful country here in America !"

The person says, "I not American, I from Puerto Rico ."

The new arrival walks further, and the next person he sees he stops, shakes his hand and says, "Thank you for the wonderful America!"

That person puts up his hand and says, "I am from Middle East , I am not American!"

He finally sees a nice lady and asks, "Are you an American?"

She says, "No, I am from Africa !"
Puzzled, he asks her, "Where are all the Americans?"

The African lady checks her watch and says..."Probably at work."

sck5 - since all but your 3rd reason are conjectural and not readily lent to proof or disproof, I shall only address the 3rd.

The deficit is not created by tax cuts. It is, and always has been, created by spending. Not only have the Bush tax cuts increased revenue, they have helped shrink the deficit. And, in doing so, have placed a greater burden of the taxes paid, on the so-called wealth.

If the deficit is a concern, why would you support someone who proposes even more spending? Because they'll raise taxes?

Sck,
Please don't bring up the whole tax cuts cause deficit thing again, I think that here within this thread that has been shown to be just not true - it might be instinctual, but it's not true.
The deficit is in part related to spending in Iraq, and in part to other programs and costs that have been incurred since Bush took office, it is certainly not the tax cuts he brought in.

I think sailnet reflects the fact that most of it's members are in the class of sailor that can afford their boat to the extent that they do much of their own maintenance or just prefer to do so as part of pride of ownership. Nobody, well almost nobody, eneded up on sailnet because of Off Topic. I cannot afford to replace my boat any more than Cam, for instance, can afford to buy the R/V he wants before he sells his boat. We both must maintain and conserve what we have each worked hard for, knowing that our boats are not necessities but merely the rewards of long, hard effort. The water in the bilge is OUR problem.

I would agree with Dan's distinctions between power and sail, although I do not know that it carries through to politics. It should. Sailors never fall for that Bobby Kennedy line about seeing the world and wondering what if. Sailors are more inclined to embrace the philosophy of, "it is what it is". They are conservative to the extent that they expect no new and exciting "revolutions" in the area of sailing, tending to concentrate on mastering the skills proven by generations of seamen before them selves. You don't see too many threads on "Never tie another bowline" or how they were able to motor all the way and the new prop really does save fuel. Conservatives wholly embrace the notion that man is not master to the elements and thus feel no need to jousting at windmills. Sailors share this same respect and knowledge of the inevitability and power of nature. both stand in awe at the immensity.

http://www.csmonitor.com/2007/0116/p01s01-usfp.html

Shows that the house appropriations committee estimates that 477 billion have been spent on the ongoing war on terror, in total - other estimates place the number at 507 billion. Of that total only a portion is directly related to Iraq and Afghan spending.
The deficit on the other hand is running at 3-400 billion per YEAR during a time when GDP grown 30% (during the 'tax cut years')and federal revenues have grown alongside the GDP.

The problem is spending, out of control federal spending. Which candidate running for office today is going to control that???
Maybe McCain, not Clinton and not Obama.

One of the biggest issues we face today is how we are mortgaging the future of our country by running deficits. Anyone taking Chinese language lessons?
