The WSJ on why Hillary is losing

The WSJ has an interesting take on the inconceivability that Hillary is losing to a third year Senator. That she is, and the way she is, should be good news to Republicans. But is John McCain the man to take advantage of the Democrat's current "back to the future" ideology? Will the fact that the Dem's as a whole have zero new ideas, and more than a few bad old ideas, be enough to persuade the electorate that it's just the same old pre-Clinton party of McGovern and Kennedy? Stunningly to even myself, I'm forced to agree with the Journal that Hillary would be the more serious canidate and president. Ouch, that hurt!

It'll be interesting when the real campaign gets into full swing, especially if it's between Obama and McCain. If it were Hillary vs. McCain you already know just about everything that would be said between them, because it's all been said before. But Obama and McCain would be worth tuning in for. Especially debates.

Obama hasnt gotten very specific yet because he is running against someone who isnt very far away from him politically. Hillary is losing because she is SO into lists of policy prescriptions, talking points, etc. But the turning point for her with the Dem party faithful was when she compounded her wrong vote to authorize invading Iraq with her vote that looked like another authorization to invade Iran. Obama has been on the right side of that issue since square one as far as Dems are concerned.

Dems really arent too impressed with the WSJ's opinion of what they ought to do. They dont want to see the Dems win anyway. As for me, I am happy to see Hillary losing - just look at this thread to see how much Republicans are already locked and loaded for a Clinton campaign. They dont even have to think about it - all of the positions and talking points can just be rerun from ten years ago, and more importantly people on both sides already have their attitudes about her pretty much set in concrete.

Obama is a very smart man. He also has oceans of cash. If what he needs to do to win is get more specific on policies then he will do that and have the money to communicate it. Dont imagine that the way the Dems run against each other is the way they will run against McCain. Also, dont think that they will stand still for the sort of smears that some rightwing nutjobs are already getting started on. Kerry proved that going on vacation while people are smearing you is a bad plan. That mistake wont happen again.

But it is still a few days until Obama has his win confirmed. Even though the news people will go on and on about delegate counts, if Obama has a clear lead in elected delegates and in the popular vote after next Tuesday then he is the guy. Then it will be time to have at it. McCain has had a pretty much free ride until now (as has Obama for the most part). That will end once the candidates are known.

That's the difference between the Obama freaks and the rest of the world. The former have their feet firmly rooted in "hope," while the rest of the world has them firmly rooted in reality. Conventional wisdom is widely accepted because (are you ready for this revelation?) it's wise. It's accepted because it has been debated and challenged and tested by all the most experienced, knowledgeable people in the world, and has not been disproven. If you think about it, what Obama is saying is that his judgment is superior to the combined judgment of all the leaders of both parties. While it's theoretically possible, he's going to have to go a long ways to prove it, although many voters will undoubtedly take it on faith.

I've always thought it ironic that the first people who urge creative new thinking are the kind of hopeful people who are least equipped to create anything. New discoveries and ideas aren't made by people who hope for them. They're made by people who have a thorough understanding of the technical issues, who carefully follow all the rules of the discipline, and who see an alternative that nobody else saw before. The rules of the discipline guide you in the right direction towards the discovery, because they tell you what you cannot do. If there is a new path to be discovered, it must be somewhere within the scope of the zone which the rules tell you is possible.

The current phrase, which has already become trite, is "thinking outside the box." Many people proudly use that expression, thinking it makes them look smart, but truthfully, the very use of that phrase demonstrates in-line thinking, rather than creative thinking. In real life, creative thinking is a rarity. If it was so easy, we wouldn't have so many problems in this world. We would have solved them all by now.

Every once in a while, a messiah comes along who claims to have the power of original thinking, because he doesn't follow conventional wisdom or conventional rules. On the contrary, he eschews them. Beware of such a person, because it's impossible to predict where he's liable to lead you. More often than not, they don't take you to your happy place.
