Funny you should say that xort. I have heard exactly that comment made about Bush who many of us think is just out of his depth in the job he has - which is why Cheney is the one who actually makes a lot of the decisions.

I am a Dem who gets irritated by the personality cult aspect of some Obama worship. I actually like Hilllary's obsession with policy detail because then you get to see exactly what she intends and can decide whether you like it or not. Obama doesnt do that but you have to wonder if maybe that isnt smart instead of "being there". In his last debate with Hillary he got more specific than he has been before. I dont doubt that he can - You dont get to be the number one student at Harvard Law and then a law professor if you dont have something on the ball and an ability to master facts and logic.

But what really makes Obama better in my book is that half the country doesnt hate him from the get go the way they do Hillary. I truly dont care if the President has a grating personality or if they remind people of their castrating bitch of an ex. I dont want to go to a BBQ with them - I want them to run the country.

Honestly, you republicans on sailnet, dont you have to admit that part of what bugs you about Hillary is .... Hillary? Bill doesnt help either. Obama has none of that baggage.

And that he has attracted the lefty wing of the party is true - but that is at least partly because that is who gets excited about primaries - for both sides it is the party faithful who come out - That is why Obama tries to satisfy the progressive wing of the Dems while McCain tries to sound like an orthodox conservative when in fact he isnt. Both of them will sound a lot more centrist (both ARE a lot more centrist) as soon as they have the nominations.

Another thought. Doesnt it say something about you neanderthal type Republicans (yes I mean YOU ) and your relation to your party when the guy most of the primary voters seem to like is McCain? I mean, the man isnt "orthodox" conservative in many of his views like some I could name around here but the Republican voters in the trenches out there voted for him over any of the other guys.

Maybe your party is coming to its senses and trying to be more progressive like the Dems! Isnt that just thrilling??!?!?!?! Maybe you "real" conservatives need a third party. I know we Dems wouldnt mind if you did. I would personally ante up $10 to get you started just because it would be a neighborly thing to do.

you managed to converse with some civility for quite a while. But I knew you would break down and resort to name calling soon enough. Thanks for restoring my 'faith' in democrats.

xort - it was a joke a joke. Looking back at the thread I guess it seems aimed at you but it actually wasnt. I was on to a new direction entirely. Sorry if I offended - no excuse for that.

but there WAS a real thought there - McCain is sort of Republican lite in a way - He ISNT a firebreather (maybe a more acceptable term?) and doesnt that say something if THAT is what most Repubs in primaries (who we imagine are the most partisan and the most politically obsessed) are voting for?

and where does that leave those of you arent republican "lite"?

From Armstrong Williams:

Quote:
Obama was given an 8 out of 100 lifetime rating (meaning he is one of the most liberal lawmakers) by the American Conservative Union, a conservative group that issues a report card on the voting records of members of Congress. Likewise, the liberal group, Americans for Democratic Action, rated Obama’s voting record in the Senate at 97.5 percent, near perfection for liberal Democrats. The National Journal even named Obama the most liberal Senator in 2007. So what exactly was he voting on that made his rankings so liberal?
Apparently Obama doesn't have to try to satisfy the left wing of the party, he IS the left wing of the party.

Ronald Reagan knew when to cut his losses. For example, he got the hell out of Lebanon when it became clear it was going to become a deep endless pit full of quicksand. We need someone with that kind of judgment right around now.

I think I remember chuckles saying he was there offshore during that time - something about shelling the bad guys with shells the size of small cars. But my memory is hazy and I may have my history all wrong.
