FDR and Truman were both senators but from what I read they were not serving senators when they ran for president. If that's correct then Harding is your man.

SWay,
Thanks for the info on Richardson. Sounds to me like he'd probably be the best choice. But then that's BHLs for you., inevitably supporting candidates who have no hope of winning.

Oh no, no, no, my furry flea-bitten friend.

Once upon a time, William jefferson Clinton was viewed as having "no chance" to win against such heavy weights as Bob Kerry. Things can, and do, change.

One side-benefit to a Thompson-Watts ticket. After Thompson completes his second term, JC Watts would be the presumptive canidate. With 8 years experience as veep, he might be a shoo-in. Presuming that the world stage is constituted as it now exists, it might be seen as beneficial to have a president with the first and middle names, "Julius Caeser". When the French are having an attack of the vapours over American foreign policy Watts could reply, as the scorpion did, "it's just my nature". And you thought the Dems had their panties in a knot over Cheney & Halliburton? Just wait until the first time JC Watts tells them, "you can call me Caeser."

tdw - FDR was only a state senator, and Truman was President by succession, before he ran for the office.

sailaway - what a deviously juicy prospect that would be. I would further guess, that JC's running mate would be a female, thereby, further cementing the string. Another definite plus to a JC Watts, we wouldn't have to listen to any opposition to him automatically branded racism, which I fear is exactly what would happen with Obama.

Beezer,
One could only hope. No, the sobriquet of Uncle Tom would be more likely, similar to what the Rev Al is basically trying out on Obama right now.

Illogical as it is, the black population seems to have an unwavering allegiance to the donkeys, despite that fact that practically all worthwhile legislation in their behalf has been either by, or with the support of the GOP. Also, notwithstanding that it was Democrats that stood atop the bulwarks of segregation. Yet, it has somehow become de rigeur, that any black has to be a Democrat, or they are an Uncle Tom.

The mental chains of political slavery that are carried by blacks in this country, far from being resented, seem in fact, to be welcomed, as they slavishly continue to support those who only see them as a voting block and not as people with real concerns.

It would seem to me, one would prefer the party of Lincoln versus the one that just talks about problems.

Oddly enough, they've been getting by on hot air for some time now, culminating in that paragon of style over substance, Slick Willy. Of course, their other carrot, is to throw copius amounts of our money at any problem.

It's going to get real interesting if things keep progressing in Iraq to the point where it becomes obvious (though you'll never read or hear in the MSM) that we can achieve our goals there. 2008 could be a most interesting election year.

And you wrote that last paragraph with a smile, didn't you John? Yeah, the delicious part of it is that most of the Dems have accepted the "quagmire" status of Iraq, and failed to allow themselves a Plan 'B'. They may end up with not just egg on their faces, but the whole chicken.
