I've got news for you. Bush and cronies did not make up wiretapping and surveillance of American citizens. Nor did they make up torture as a method of extracting information - didn't re-invent it either, it's been out there all along. Civil liberty violations have been a part of our country since BEFORE it was born out of the efforts of our forefathers.

Indeed and instead, Bush had the moral fortitude to stand up and say 'we need to do this, here is why, and we'd rather do it legally, let's talk about it and get this done together'.
He could just as easily have shuffled it all under the covers with classified executive orders, pardons etc. The same way EVERY past president has done it.
Think about it.
I respect that about Bush, it's about the only thing I do respect from him.

Oh God. I started the torture thread back up again. I dont think anyone changed their mind the last time so I am sorry I seem to have gone back to it. Clearly there's little or no common ground on this one so I am out.

The guy sleeps with a teacher; that could explain a lot. (g) I thought the students were handling those chores these days. (vbg)

Anyone look at those voter demographics in post 1752?

Mo Dowd in full flower

When Maureen Dowd is on, she's really on. The below column is one of the reasons she holds her seat at the NYT. We can only hope that she could somehow turn such incisiveness to matters of policy sometime during her life. enjoy! http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/09/op...ml?ref=opinion

Richard Cohen thinks GOP could win?

This guy is pretty darn liberal and he's scared. Why? Because nobody, but nobody, see's either of the Democratic canidates conceding before the convention. And that could mean a convention a lot like 1968, the year the Dems essentially punted the presidency away for a couple of decades. Good article.

Sailormon6 will become famous soon enough
Once again, President Bush is way ahead of the pundits in his appraisal of the political scene. He predicted the Republicans would retain the White House a month ago, before the Dems even began to self-destruct. That was way back when Barack and Hillary were still smiling sweetly at each other - before Hillary graciously offered to let Barack be Vice President - before Tony Rezko ever cast his shadow in criminal court - Before Barack's campaign chief pronounced him unprepared to take that 3:00 a.m. telephone call - Before Democrat Senator Christopher Dodd opined that Hillary's term as First Lady didn't qualify her for the Presidency - before "Barack's Believers" threatened to burn Denver to the ground if they don't get their way. How do you go from "the dream team" to "Nightmare on Elm Street" in such a short time? It must be more of those Republican dirty tricks. Yeah, that's it. It's Karl Rove, and Ken Starr, and the worst of them all, Newt Gingrich. All those guys we love to hate.

That's why people are so fascinated by politics. For pure entertainment, it beats the heck out of Donald Trump and "The Apprentice."

And, if the Presidential follies weren't enough, the morning news is agog with the story of Democrat New York Governor Elliot Spitzer, complete with restrospectives of the past sexual transgressions of Democrats.

These are the people who have declared Iraq a "mess" and who think we should trust them to lead us out of it. They can't even get themselves out of the quagmire that they created of their own Primary election process.
