Neither of which really work.

Just a guess but:

progressists would be the liberals
conservationists would be the green(another color!) party

donrr1 is on a distinguished road
They are lobby's (Special interest groups) that pick the party (Democrat or Republican) that represents their interests best, then buy the legislation they're after through that party by way of 'donations'.

Actually big business is neither republican nor democrat. It is only capitalist. big business, for instance, would love "Hilary Care" for a solution to the health care "crisis". Ford and GM would love for the feds to assume their burdensome benefit plans. Big business will side with whatever party brings them their "pork".

Small business, on the other hand, is reliably republican. Taxation issues affect them the most of perhaps all citizens. Changes in tax policy determine not only the profitability of their business but also whether they can afford to hire additional employees and expand their business. They also do not possess the legal and lobbying staff that big business has in house, to protect their individual interests.

Some rough, debatable, definitions:

Paleo-conservatives: Believe in standing athwart history yelling, "Stop"
Conservatives: Believe the 1950's may have been the high water of American
culture.
Neo-conservatives: Conservative on taxes and defense. Somewhat socially
liberal. Frequently defined as liberals with teen-age daugh-
ters.
Liberals: Believe government is usually the best solution to the nations
problems.
Liberal Left: Believe the 1960's were the high water mark of American culture.
Loony Left: Believe that the Soviet Union had the right idea, was greatly
misunderstood, and that "can't we just all get along" is a valid
geo-political view-point.
Republican: 2 classes-economic and social conservatives with some blending
of the two classes.
Democrat: The party of the "Big Tent". You can believe anything and find a
home here. Sub-class: Blue collar democrat-may be socially and
economically conservative, but does not trust his boss.
Green: Typically Californians with a free supply of mind-altering drugs.
Generally feel that 1492 was the start of world decline.
Independents: People who will generally vote their pocket-book, but can, on
occasion swing wildly across the spectrum, voting for such
people as Georgian peanut farmers and B-movie actors.

Mate, progressive and American politics are a contradiction in terms.

Sailaway....Neo-cons also espouse an activist/interventionist foreign policy and I think your definition overlooks that most important distinction from traditional conservatives, who advocate either an isolationist or pragmatic foreign policy.

Giu...I don't know if you got the words mixed up but two are close...
Conservationist....means environmentally active...represented by Green Party and in our "two-party" system leans Democratic.
Conservative...believes in traditional values (free enterprise, personal responsibiity,moral/religious beliefs etc.) and minimal government and strict interpertation of the constitution. Generally votes republican.

I'd also add LIBERTARIAN party... basically says keep gov't out of our lives. Everything is OK if it does not hurt others. Personal freedom and liberty is the paramount value. Private property should not be taxed or regulated. Complete separation of church and state. Generally votes republican.
