As usual Mr. Impervious is arguing with himself alone. I, and a goodly number of conservatives present here, have repeatedly stated that I am a conservative first and only a Republican to the extent that the Republican party represents conservatve values. Cam and PB have said much the same thing and ChucklesR has made much the same point regarding his lack of party affiliation.
So your assignation of our party doing such and such, and your desire for us to defend what we clearly condemn is clearly inappropriate if not obvious to the unencumbered mind. We've already stated our dissatisfaction with Senator McCain yet, it surprises no one, you will ascribe him to be our canidate. I suggest you let us worry about our canidate and you can then concentrate on defending your avowed canidate. He's gonna need the help.
I may even vote for Bob Barr, fully realizing that I'm wasting my vote. I'm more than about half way convinced that the country needs an Obama presidency, just like it did a Carter presidency. After it's demise we can then sweep out not only the Dem's but the liberal and moderate Republicans. "Kinder, gentler" and "compassionate" conservatism have gotten us nowhere and are merely code words for, no strong principles. Winning without change is no win. Reagan did that and Bush squandered it's legacy. That Bill clinton had to govern as a moderate to conservative president is only a testimony to the sea-change that took place in American politics under Reagan. That the country remains in large part moderately conservative should cause concern in the Obama camp and prepare the left for only a short, if any, resurgence.
