By TALKING, Israel has reached a peace agreement with their former energy Jordan which has held to this very day.
Both of these former enemies tried hard at various points to kill them all, but by TALKING they are now living in peace. There arent very many Israelis who dont think that is a good thing.
The Syrians are a tougher nut to crack but if by TALKING they can reach an agreement with them too, then they will have surrounded themselves with countries with whom they are at peace even though once upon a time they were trying to kill them all.
That doesnt mean they disarm. That doesnt mean they start behaving as if they were the USA and Canada. It DOES mean that they are much better off than when they were invading each other and actually trying to kill each other.
And Sway, what is wrong with talking to Iranians? Hell, Ronald Reagan actually sold the mullahs arms - or are you forgetting your history? I would say that what Obama said is far tamer than actually selling them arms - It is much less dangerous to talk than to arm them.
Besides, this whole discussion is rather simplistic and naive. The "Iranians" are a whole country with internal politics and various factions some of which are favorable to us. Rather than throwing a temper tantrum and disrespecting them all which causes them to rally around their flag and leaders (just like anyone would do) we would do well to try to influence the situation so that the factions that want to open to the West benefit and the mullahs lose. It was reported that the mullahs were unpopular and in a precarious position before Bush started calling them "evil" and thereby strengthened their standing vis a vis their domestic opposition.
And what of Mr. McCain in all of this? He apparently cant keep straight the difference between Shias and Sunnis. Read it here if you dont believe it

Is he or anyone on his side aware that the main result of the Iraq war has been to strengthen Iran? It used to be that we exploited the fact that Iraq's biggest historical enemy has always been Iran. Are they even aware that Iranians are not Arabs? Reagan's team actually got this one right and helped promote a war between these two historical enemies which kept both of them off our backs for decades. Now Iran is the single biggest political influence in Iraq, including influencing the government we helped put in place.
What a mess. These guys seems clueless. And you think just talking to the Iranians is so terrible? Geez
Bush is the FIRST PRESIDENT EVER to decide that he wouldnt even talk to our enemies. If you think that has had really peachy keen great results around the world then you are in a very small minority. Us democrats sincerely hope all you repubs stick to your losing strategy at least until November. Then you can go back to being angry at the world but not having to accomplish anything because you are out of power.
