Jody...I must disagree...While the choice of a VP is interesting and can win a home state or two...there has never been a VP that has been THE deciding factor in the last century...unless you think that Al Gore got Clinton in!
Traditionally Veeps are selected and announced right before or DURING the conventions to pump up the ratings and viewers with the suspense so it is still a bit early in the game unless someone starts falling way behind and NEEDS to make news.

Like Cam said, the Veep announcement is usually saved until it can be of some benefit, because when the candidate announces their pick for VP they are assured of having media coverage no matter what the other candidate just did. It's a way to steal someone else's thunder. That's why McCain was dropping hints about it while Obama was overseas, to distract the media who was focused solely on Obama.

Also, while both candidates have won the primary process, neither is officially the nominee of their party yet.

It certainly seems that way, doesn't it Rags? Pride doth goeth before a fall though, and there's still over 3 months until the voters, rather than the media, foreign populations, and other various and sundry disciples, have their say.

That reminds me of a political cartoon I saw in our local paper recently. It showed McCain and Obama in a foot race. McCain was portrayed as obviously working and tired. He was also a little behind Obama. Meanwhile, Obama looked relaxed, as he was carried piggyback style by a third character labeled "media". I was surprised our local paper ran it.

Tom Sowell hits the nail on the head once again ..... "It is hard to get the supporters of Barack Obama to give a coherent reason for their support. The basis for their support seems to be guilt, gullibility or-- in the case of some conservatives-- a hatred of John McCain."
And from the other side of the political spectrum, Richard Cohen of the Washington Post ....

There you go again PB!! Thinking Democrats dont have a "coherent" reason is really great coming from a supporter of George Bush, probably the most incoherent President we have ever had!! Just because you reflexively dismiss any reason cited doesnt mean we dont have them - it just means you dont agree with them which is perfectly understandable if you are a Repub.
Funny how tens of millions of people are so lost in space they like the Democrat for NO REASON!!!!
Its no wonder the Repubs are losing so badly when they are apparently completely clueless as to why anybody wouldnt love their President and their heir apparent. All I can say is, Keep up the good work!!!! I for one devoutly hope all republicans keep on doing what they have been doing since that has reduced them to the most unpopular status of any President ever.

Here are a list of "pro" reasons to go for Obama as opposed to the "anti" reasons that many have noted (and those anti reasons really are important to those of us who think Bush has been a disaster of historic proportions)
1. Obama is a very intelligent guy
2. Obama has consistently said he will get us out of Iraq
3. Obama has consistently said that health insurance reform is a top priority
4. Obama clearly is more worried about the environment than Republicans are.
5. Obama clearly is able to get other countries to follow his lead whereas Bush and I suspect McCain have (or will) alienated them all to the point where we are no longer the leader of the free world for the simple reason that nobody wants to follow us any more. Getting others to do what we want them to is an important talent in a President and one which Bush lacks entirely. (unless he bombs them)
6. I trust Obama to pick judges that are worthy of their posts and are not right wing ideologues.
Now you may not like any of those reasons. But they are real reasons that the majority of the people seem to find convincing. But as I always say, its a free country and if you disagree then go vote for McCain and have four more years of the same!!!!
