I thought it was a tremendously important speech in that it established that she is a serious candidate for VP, and not a redneck hick from the sticks that the media has been trying desperately to portray her and her family as. She erased any doubts that she is tough enough, smart enough, and sophisticated enough to give the Obama/Biden team nightmares. Good for you Sarah, excellent speech.

I think Sarah did an excellent job last night. She's articulate, folksy, has a good sense of humor and her jabs at the Obama camp were not cheap shots, but legitimate concerns / observations.

That may well prove to be the signature line of the speech.
Some subtle, and not so subtle, things.
Don't know about the camera angles you had, but did you notice how most everyone in her family took a turn holding the baby? And how comfortable and natural her husband (his resume screams tough guy) seemed doing so? That's almost a perfect subliminal message of, we are family, we stick together and get the job done.
After days of being attacked and ridiculed, she never sounded mean, angry or bitter. She threw it right back at 'em with toughness and humor.
And after days of hearing how she hadn't been on the national stage, never been under the bright lights, she came across as calm, cool and collected. She took the whole issue of experience and said, Bring it on.
The main thing though, that I think she accomplished, and what Obama and the smart people in his campaign feared the most (besides energizing the base), is reflected by a T-shirt going around .......
I Am Sarah Palin
Her Story is My Story
And that's a story that will resonate with a whole lot of people.

Listening to some of the after speech analysis, I heard a guy from the Clinton administration being interviewed by Chris Wallace. Not sure who it was. After a few minutes of praising the speech and Gov. Palin, Chris reminded him that he was there to criticize her.
The guy then said something like, "well, I didn't agree with anything specific that she said. And then continued praising the speech.
Another interviewee on BBC summed it up this way. "Gov. Palin is impossible to dislike."
She hit the best home run of the night. Baseball not withstanding.

I know you guys liked it. Too bad she lied. See the AP's summary of them all
Attacks, praise stretch truth - Yahoo! News
- She didnt cut taxes in Alaska. She raised them, including a windfall profits tax on oil companies, something Obama has been for and the GOP against
- She was for the Bridge to Nowhere until it got canned. Which happened a year before she became governor. There is no truth whatever to her repeated claim that she said "Thanks but no thanks" to the bridge because she couldnt have, given the timing
- In fact, she hired lobbyists to get MORE pork for Alaska - And was successful
- She is completely off about the two candidates tax proposals
In other nonsense from McCain and his campaign
- She "commanded" the Alaska National Guard. Please, even the actual commander says he doesnt command it when it is federalized
She has learned to be a national Republican well. Lie with a smile and when they call you on it, do it again.

He**, you aren't grabbing for straws, you're grabbing for toothpicks.
I've already posted the rebuttals before, I'm not going to bother to do it again. The only point I'm going to make is this: Don't try to confuse what she did in Wasilla, with what she did as Governor. Different scale, different circumstances, different situation. Everytime you used the word Alaska, it was about Wasilla ..... you know, the little town that doesn't mean much. And to call $350 million LESS in Federal money more pork, is patently ridiculous.
Once again, you go off half-cocked, to one website that says what you want to hear, and run with it. Just like what's been happening in the media all week. And if anyone has any doubt about what happens next from the media scrutiny that Obama/Biden will never face, I'll put it too you bluntly ... The Left tried to rape her, and got their ba**S handed to 'em on a platter. It ain't no more complicated than that.

Oh Lord: The AP. About as biased as they get. No surprises here.

Really? Where does it say that? What I read is the she did say "no thanks," albeit only after the project got labeled "The Bridge To Nowhere."
Perhaps you weren't reading the article you cited?

Unlike Michigan, where our conribution to the federal money pit has consistently exceeded what we got out. I have an idea: Let's pass a balanced budget amendment, then reduce money sent to the feds to the point it's barely able to operate, then cut just a bit more? That way there'll be none of tthis ear-marking going on.

That's not what I read. What I read was that she exaggerated (there's a shock--politicians never do that), but was correct in thrust.

She did and still does command the Alaska National Guard. Just as Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal commands that states National Guard, as illustrated by his activating it prior to hurrican Gustav's landfall. As has been noted by others in this thread: You really need to learn what you're talking about.

Yeah, Democrats never do that.
Btw: She may have stretched the truth, but has she been caught in an actual, out-and-out lie, as you assert?

It's interesting reading the reactions this morning. The major complaint I'm reading is that she didn't lay out all of McCain's agenda ....... DUH, he's the one running for president, not her.
Did she fudge on some of her accomplishments? Probably. In the 45 years I've been following politics, I've never seen a pol that doesn't. Thing is though, at least she's got some. At least, when faced with a decision on what was best to do for the people she served, instead of voting present, she made a decision, yea or nay. Leaders make decisions, not say present.

She did tackle issues that were HER strengths - energy, taxes and of course her ability to be a maverick.
But let us also not discount what this speech was intended to do. Introduce her to the American public (and the world) to get her story out there and to demonstrate why she was the pick for John McCain.
I am sure for some she was just another pretty face, to others they thought "another Hilliary wanna be", and to a majority simply - "we have a state called Alaska and they have a governor."
What people read and saw from the media was a a step by step "live report" of the witch hunt in progress.
She effectively dismissed all of those fears and even Dem VP-elect Biden commented, "She will be a formidable opponent - there is no doubt on that".
I am not a big fan of the republicans and not necessarily of John McCain either - but I have to say that I have been swayed a bit to look at McCain in a different light. Selecting her was a change for the Republican party - and she brings real story to the table that symbolizes the story told and untold from coast to coast from all aspects of life.
It was a good strategy not to go over every issue - Dems are not pleased because they have to work harder to figure things out before the debates and not much fodder was left on the convention floor for them to pick up and use as a counter.
That had to be one of the most powerful vp-elect speeches in my lifetime at least.
