" The demise of overpaid, union jobs is not the end of the American Dream. "
Heres a lil story (and history)
Back in the late 70's GE was producing televisions in Liverpool NY. Had been since the late '50's. huge investments in the factories, as well as GE's heavy military did a lot of CAD and research there.
OK... Every 3 yrs the IBEW renegotiated the contract for the over 1500 workers. All is good.
My ex-Father-in-Law was at that time a 17 year GE Employee. he was a Floor Waxer. not a sweeper, not a mopper, he didn't empty the trash in the offices. They had other individuals to do that. If the floor wasn't swept, He didn't do it, he waxed. If the floor wasn't mopped, he waxed it. If the trash can was still on the floor, he didn't move it, He waxed.
For that job, he was paid the pawltry sum of 19.85 per hour. Keep in mind, this is 1978, and he was pulling a little over 60k per year, with overtime... in 1978. As a WAXER.
Now, every 3 yrs, the contract was up. Costs were high, Every 3 yrs, he could bank on ytaking his vacation for the first 3 weeks of july, 'cuz they'd strike. Like clockwork. Every 3 yrs, at least a 3 week strike. Since the early 60's Strike. OK.
Enter Jack Welsh. "Neutron Jack"
During the prievious negotiations with the IBEW, jack said, "If you go out on strike again, I'll close this plant."
Yea, right. GE made over 3000 TV's a day there, the largest producer of US made TVs at that time. He wasn't going to close the plant, never happen.
June 1st, IBEW opens negotiations, July 1st, IBEW goes out on strike.
July 2nd. GE Electronics Park, Liverpool NY chained its gates. Production of TV's closed for good.
Good job, IBEW. Thanks.
GE reopened the plant 11 months later, with just heavy military and the CRT division.
Nov. 1987, the cathode ray tube div. closed for good.
