1) Raises the FDIC limit from 100k$us to 250k$us, how much of a liability is that for the tax payer ? No idea.
2) No more Mark to Market, and I don't know what they are going to do instead, anybody know what the new valuation method will be ? Or maybe they are just going to let banks decide for themselves if they have enough money to cover it ? Who knows, anybody ?
3) 100b$us in tax breaks. Well, hey, you know, it's not like the government is spending money it gets from taxes anyway, everybody knows taxes would never cover this (%*$^#^ .. so why not throw in a tax break. I don't know why they want us to pay taxes at all, let's just do away with the whole idea and borrow everything we need, or even better, let's just get the Fed to print it ... Yes, the government can write treasury bonds, and then the Fed can buy them, simple.
4) ... (?) ... Did anybody actually read the whole thing ? I know there was something in there, in the footnotes, about saving banks or something, mortgage something or other ...
I love what headline on this articles calls it, "Bailout with 'sweeteners' heads towards Senate win" .. CLICK

Reason: spelling
But that's what I mean TDW, you mention nuclear, oil, etc, getting buckets of money. .
Pretty much we are in agreement. It seems to me that be it either 'alternative' or 'mainstream' energy the taxpayers funds go towards some kind of slush fund that appears to do nowt but enrich the energy producers.
OK, so self interets from a cruising sailors perspective does come into play but it seems strange that with all these subsidies floating around, advances in solar cell and battery technology is pitifully slow.
I do take your point however and I happily agree with you. How can solar be considered alternative when almost every house you see these days sports a solar array. Alternative to what ?
Sway - I think you've strayed off the board mate or you are deliberately misinterpreting what I said. I was not having a go at the free market system as such but at the inherent corruption that exists throughout the world. That's why I didn't only mention Cheney and his mates but Russia and China as well. Myopia is as Myopia does old son. Do try and keep up. I am quite happy to live under a free market system but I wouldn't mind the playing field being kept at least vaguely level.

Fluffy,
I thought of you this PM after viewing a news report advocating the consumption of marsupials down under as a partial solution to the methane emissions problem with cattle and it's GW impact. They were advancing the notion that kangaroos and other marsupials emit far lower levels of methane and greenhouse gases, a point I find difficult to reconcile with my experiences. Your friend, Mr. Rudd, seemed fully involved in the debate so I suppose there's good news there. He's no time to be messing about in actually important matters. (g)
I'll have to confess that I missed the day's homily on venality and corruption in your last. Silly me, I just interpreted it as an ad hominem attack on Messrs Bush and Cheney. Upon examining it's broader implications I'm of course reminded that we live in a fallen state for which only the grace of God propitiates. Were that my faith the equal of your own. I'm sure that someone better than I will be along anon to testify to the spiritual cleansing, if not restorative powers, found in the office of the ex-presidency. A typhoon here, a malarial epidemic there, and a photo-op with Bono pave the road to the hereafter like no mere free trade agreement could ever aspire, let alone energy policy. Why, ex-presidents have been able to achieve miracles in even the areas of optical restoration...Jimmy Carter being able to see the basic good will and human decency undergirding the Palestinian people's society. In the meantime, we should of course continue to pray for the redemption of the malevolent souls of Messrs Bush and Cheney.
Too bad that door won't be hitting people like Dodd and Frank as well. Of course, the real irony here is that one of the people that tried to do something about this before it got to this point, is hurt by it. While the guy who through his community organizer work help create it, profits from it.

I usually have no trouble understanding what point you are making but you lost me on this one. I dont get the connection between community organizing and financial meltdown (if that is what you meant)
I pray that the door doesnt hit them in the ass on their way out
Which cant come too soon for me.
Sck5, I hope that among the Democrats elected we will get a lot of these - Blue Dogs. These are by far my favorite kind of Democrats, fiscally conservative ones!

As a community organizer, he was part of the push for subprime loans, aka Affordable Housing, for people who weren't credit worthy. Subprime loans grew into the present "crisis". And please note, I didn't say he created it, only that he helped to. Check on his activities with ACORN for more info.

Be interesting to see the media coverage if McCain was found to have multiple campaign donations in the thousands of dollars from someone named Good Will, whose job is Loving for an employer named You. Or a supporter named Doodad Pro doing the same job for the same company. Or millions from overseas, without any verification they are from American citizens.
What we do know, is they will continue to ignore it since it's about Obama. Just as they have ignored the possible Logan Act violations from Obama's trip to Iraq. His ties to ACORN and Ayres, as well as Rezko. In fact, there's no lack of things that would be investigated where it anyone other than Obama.
It seems somehow odd that we know more about a VP candidate than we do one for President.
